Five Tips to Save your Business Model | Innovation Management

Plantes? recommendations for looking at business model innovation opportunities include answering the question of ?What business are we in?? from the perspective of current and prospective customers, solving a higher-level problem, creating a new product or service category, keep answering the question (to guard against creeping complacency) and to be comfortable with not having an answer (develop a mindset of constant probing instead of taking a ?check it and forget it? attitude).

Boy Donates Bar Mitzvah Money to Fund Veterans' Reconstructive Surgeries

At a time when he?s supposed to be celebrating himself, 13-year-old Josh Neidorf decided to make his bar mitzvah about celebrating those who serve their country. As a result, he donated most of ?his bar mitzvah money to Operation Mend, a groundbreaking program out of UCLA that repairs extreme injuries and disfigurements in soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Before anyone shrugs off the gesture as a boy giving up the equivalent of his allowance for a good cause, rest assured Neidorf gave away much more than that. The?Associated Press?reports this child?personally donated $13,000 to the medical facility.?

Neidorf explained his decision to local news outlet, KCAL9, ?I just love knowing that it?s going somewhere to help the people who save our lives and keep us safe everyday.?

Operation Mend is a privately-funded program that was founded in 2007, by philanthropist Ron Katz. According to The Huffington Post, Katz was inspired by the news of returning vet Aaron Mankin and the dozens of surgeries he would need to repair an explosives injury to his face. ?Mankin eventually became the first Operation Mend patient.

Katz told the Post, "My wife and I soon realized that there were dozens of Aarons out there. These men and women deserve not only the best that the defense sector has to offer, they deserve the best that the private sector has to offer as well."

Though it started with plastic reconstruction, Operation Mend has expanded to include a host of other highly technical specialties including orthopedic reconstruction, airway reconstruction and mental health programs for both soldiers and their caregivers.

Veterans face some incredible odds upon their return to civilian life, chief among them being their health issues. Of the 2 million veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who?ve already returned home, the Los Angeles Times reports most endure recurring issues from physical trauma that include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), hearing loss and tinnitus, and head injuries.?

Operation Mend may be small in terms of the number of patients it can serve at any time (it will have served 72 this year), but it provides a place for our most severely injured to be treated by the nation?s most skilled medical staff using the latest in advanced techniques.

Obviously our returning soldiers are the most deserving of ample and expert medical care. But adopting veteran care as a cultural priority clearly has positive results for all of us. Children like Joshua Neidorf learn and can demonstrate real generosity and people in general come to understand we're so much stronger when we refuse to leave any of our own behind.

Are you a veteran or the loved one of a returning soldier? What would you like to see provided for them to make the transition to civilian life smoother??

Jordan sentences ex-intelligence chief to prison

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? A Jordanian criminal court sentenced the kingdom's ex-intelligence chief on Sunday to 13 years and three months in prison for embezzlement of public funds, money laundering and abuse of office.

It was the harshest sentence in years against such a high-profile personality in Jordan.

Presiding judge Nashaat Akhras also demanded in court that defendant Mohammed al-Dahabi pay 21 million Jordanian dinars ($29.6 million) in fines to the state and return money he allegedly laundered and embezzled during his 2005-2008 tenure as head of Jordanian intelligence. The judge said the amount is estimated at 24 million dinars ($34 million).

"You deserve the harshest punishment for being a traitor to the people who trusted you with a government position and state funds," Akhras told the ex-official. An anxious-looking Al-Dahabi stood silently in the dock, wearing a dark blue suit, as the verdict was read out.

Al-Dahabi's lawyer Mahmoud Kilani said he will appeal the verdict.

Al-Dahabi was arrested in February, when inspectors from the Central Bank of Jordan suspected transactions worth millions of dollars had gone through his bank account.

The rare case against a senior official is meant to show Jordan's seriousness in efforts to tackle graft and corruption ? a demand voiced in recent street protests.

In 2003, Jordan sentenced another ex-intelligence chief to eight years in jail for forgery of state documents and abuse of office. Sameeh al-Batikhi was released after serving his prison term.

95% The Sessions

All Critics (126) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (120) | Rotten (6)

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

This is a crowd-pleaser of the finest sort.

Using only his tilted head, his eyes, nose, and mouth and that quizzical voice, Hawkes brings O'Brien to life.

It's funny and well-meaning, with great performances, but the story plays out more like an Afterschool Special with full-frontal nudity.

John Hawkes and Helen Hunt generate an endearing chemistry, here, turning in a couple of virtuoso performances deserving of serious consideration come Oscar season.

Writer-director Ben Lewin has made the decision to position the film somewhere between the comedic and dramatic genres.... and it works.

Australian veteran writer/director Ben Lewin (The Dunera Boys) delivers a heartfelt gem that is as moving as it is unassuming. It easily chimes in as one of the films of the year.

John Hawkes delivers what is perhaps the performance of his career and Helen Hunt is fearless and charming. The Sessions is a heartfelt journey that will leave your emotional spectrum overwhelmed to your heart's content.

The Sessions is entertaining but also the sort of feature that can wait for a DVD rental. Sex scenes aside, it feels puny on the big screen.

Were you to come to The Sessions expecting a disease-of-the-week heartstring-puller, you'd be completely out of luck -- fortunately.

Their film is more than a skin flick, despite it definitely being that. Just as Cheryl is more than a prostitute, while definitely still that.

Most R-rated comedies involve meaningless sex. "The Sessions" is the rare one about meaningful sex.

For such a specific story, affecting only a few, the film triumphs in revealing a kaleidoscope of human emotions and truths.

Driven by John Hawkes' inspired turn, this is a candid, funny and touching charmer.

I just found that it was a tremendously compassionate film and you think it's not something I would rush out to see but, in fact, it's such a lovely, nourishing experience, this film.

Importantly, the film doesn't take itself too seriously, and there's a pleasantly off-beat sense of humour behind the agony and the ecstasy of this beautiful movie.

John Hawkes is exceptional. Look for him and Helen Hunt in the Oscar mix.

An extraordinary account of sexual exploration and intimacy against the odds, The Sessions is a powerful achievement.

Sex & a very singular man

Boasts a rare, inherent understanding of its subject, with Lewin now facing the prospect of becoming seriously hot property, as awards season beckons.

We are engaged by the compelling characters and a man's discovery of sexuality in a short span of time and in a unique way. And we are touched by the relationship that develops

Sex, religion, poetry and the disabled might be the subject matter, but nothing will prepare you for the emotions that are shared in this unique, poignant and unforgettable film

The most grown-up depiction of emotionally meaningful sexual relations... that will have any sort of general distribution in U.S. movie theaters in this or any of the next several years.

(AP) ? A source confirms to The Associated Press that Justin Bieber is no longer Selena Gomez's "Boyfriend."

The source is not authorized to discuss the split with the press and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The breakup apparently happened last week. Distance and their busy schedules were cited as factors.

Eighteen-year-old Bieber is touring to promote his latest album, "Believe," which contains the hit "Boyfriend." Twenty-year-old Gomez is filming a "Wizards of Waverly Place" reunion for the Disney Channel.

The pair made their relationship public in February 2011.

E! News was the first to report the split.

Bieber seems to be doing OK, at least publicly. On the red carpet of Wednesday's Victoria's Secret fashion show he said, "I'd rather be here than anywhere in the world."

(AP) ? Twin suicide bombings shook a southern Syrian city on Saturday, killing at least 20 regime troops, an activist group said.

The early morning blasts in Daraa targeted an encampment for government forces in the city, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on the ground.

The explosions were followed by clashes between regime forces and rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad, said the Observatory. Its chief, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said at least 20 soldiers were killed in the blasts but the claim could not be independently verified.

The state-run news agency SANA said the explosions caused multiple casualties and heavy material damage, but did not provide further details.

Daraa was the birthplace of the uprising against Assad, which erupted in March 2011. The conflict began largely with peaceful protests against Assad's rule but turned bloody after rebels took up arms in response to the regime's crackdown.

The crisis has since morphed into a vicious civil war and in recent months, rebels have driven regime forces out of much of a pocket of northwestern Syria and are battling troops in several key cities and towns. The fight has also taken on dangerous sectarian tones between a mainly Sunni opposition and a regime dominated by Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

"I heard two very loud explosions and a third smaller one followed by bursts of gunfire," said Mohammad Abu Houran, an activist in Daraa. He said the first two were likely car bombs and the third a mortar shell or rocket propelled grenade.

Abu Houran said black smoke could be seen over the high-security area, which was sealed off. Heavy shooting could be heard from the area for about 10 minutes after the explosions, he added.

Bombings targeting state security institutions have become frequent in recent months, and military intelligence branches in Damascus and other cities have been hit. Most dramatically in July, rebels detonated explosives inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus, killing four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister.

The targeted area is considered a security zone that houses a branch of the country's Military Intelligence as well as an officer's club where dozens of regime forces are based. Around 30 tanks that regime forces use to shell Daraa and surrounding areas are also stationed in a nearby stadium, activists said.

Despite gaining control over large swathes of territory, particularly in the country's north, Syria's rebels are far outgunned by the military, which has increasingly relied on airstrikes against rebel strongholds.

The Syrian opposition, which is deeply divided and plagued by rivalries, says it needs weapons to break the military stalemate and defeat Assad. The rebels' Western backers have been reluctant to send weapons to the opposition fighters, for fear they will fall into the wrong hands.

George Sabra, the newly elected leader of the main opposition bloc, the Syrian National Council, urged the international community on Saturday to support rebels without any conditions.

"Unfortunately, we get nothing from them, except some statements, some encouragement" while Assad's allies "give the regime everything," Sabra told The Associated Press on the sidelines of a weeklong SNC conference in the Qatari capital of Doha.

Sabra was heading an SNC delegation Saturday in talks with rival opposition groups on forging a new, broader and more inclusive opposition leadership group ? an idea promoted by Western and Arab backers of those trying to oust Assad.

Syria has dismissed the meeting in Doha, and Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi called it a political folly. In an interview on state-run Syrian TV aired late Friday, al-Zoubi said those who "meet in hotels" abroad are "deluding themselves" if they think they can overthrow the government.

Activists say more than 36,000 people have died in Syria during the nearly 20-month-old conflict.

The Daraa bombings come a day after as many as 11,000 people were said to have fled Syria over just 24 hours, to escape fierce fighting between rebels and government forces ? the latest surge of refugees fleeing the civil war.

The flood of Syrians into neighboring Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon was "the highest that we have had in quite some time," said Panos Moumtzis, the U.N. refugee agency's regional coordinator for the region said Friday.

About 2,000 to 3,000 people are fleeing Syria daily, and the recent surge brings the number registered with the UNHCR to more than 408,000, said Moumtzis.

The largest flow into Turkey came from the fighting at Ras al-Ayn in the predominantly Kurdish oil-producing northeastern province of al-Hasaka, where rebels were fighting government forces.

Virtualization ? hardware and software working together in harmony ...

We?ve been watching the industry, as a whole, move from a focus on physical system performance, reliability, availability, cost, power consumption or some other attribute, to speaking about how applications, application components and complete workloads can be moved into a more virtual environment. This is a game changer on many levels, in particular in improving IT efficiency, which reduces data center energy usage, which is good for both the organization?s pocketbook and the environment.

What is often held in the shadows and seldom discussed is that a virtualized environment is a carefully constructed and managed illusion that requires a well architected balance of capabilities of system processors, memory, internal communications busses, storage devices, networking equipment, as well as a complex layer of software technologies.

Virtualization is a relative newcomer to the industry standard X86 world. While it is growing by leaps and bounds, it is important to acknowledge that nearly all of the concepts we?re seeing emerging in the X86 world were developed, tested and, some would say, perfected elsewhere. I?m referring to IBM?s System z (commonly known as ?the mainframe?). These systems and the supported software continue to drive industry innovation and are often the most efficient and cost-effective way to address large scale workloads.
What Is Virtualization?

Virtualization is a way to abstract applications and their underlying components away from the hardware supporting them and present a logical or virtual view of these resources. This logical view may be strikingly different from the physical view.

Virtualization can create the artificial view that many computers are a single computing resource or what appears to be a single system is really many individual computers working together. It can make a single large storage resource appear to be many smaller ones or make many smaller storage devices appear to be a single device.

This virtual view is constructed using excess processing power, memory, storage, or network bandwidth. For this magic to work smoothly, efficiently and reliability, it is necessary for system architects and developers to find the correct balance of hardware and software functions. If the magic incantation is done just so, high levels of manageability, reliability, availability, and performance are the results. Other important results of virtualization are minimizing requirements for floor space, power or the production of heat. This can mean smaller, faster, more power efficient, more ?green? computing for everyone.

Having the correct balance of hardware can be seen at many layers of virtualization technology that is in use today. Let?s examine the layers of virtualization technology and how having the right mix of hardware and software can transform virtualization from a computer science project to a technology that can be safely and simply used in a production environment.

Houston defense firm pays up in - Business Management Daily

BAE Systems Tactical Vehicle Sys??tems of Houston has agreed to settle a disability discrimination suit filed on behalf of a morbidly obese former employee. The EEOC alleged BAE illegally fired Ronald Kratz II, who had earned satisfactory performance ratings before his termination.

The EEOC argued that BAE re??garded Kratz as disabled because of his morbid obesity, yet never engaged him in an ADA-mandated interactive discussion to determine if reasonable accommodations would have allowed him to perform his job.

In fact, the lawsuit noted, Kratz had been successfully performing his job despite the lack of any reasonable accommodations.

Under the settlement, Kratz will receive $55,000 and six months of outplacement assistance from the company. BAE must train its managers and HR professionals on equal employment opportunity compliance, disability discrimination law and responsibilities regarding reasonable accommodation to employees and applicants.

Note: Don?t play doctor. Assume that employees who need an accommodation will request one.

(AP) ? First, Andre Iguodala threw a bad pass. Then, he took too many steps.

Two costly turnovers late in a close game. In his Denver home debut, no less.

Miffed by his miscues, Iguodala went to work, scoring six of his 17 points over the final three minutes to help the Denver Nuggets hold off the Detroit Pistons 109-97 on Tuesday night.

"When I make a mistake, I really want to make it up," Iguodala said.

And make it up he certainly did as he played a big role in the Nuggets snapping a three-game skid.

Even before tipoff, Iguodala got the capacity crowd riled up by grabbing the microphone and giving an impassioned speech to the fans: "This is a big year for us! We need your support!"

Then, he came through at crunch time. Not just with his offensive exploits, either, but his defensive intensity as well. He also added 10 rebounds.

"He was a presence everywhere, on every part of the court," Danilo Gallinari said. "He's great for us when he plays like that."

The Nuggets broke out their new canary yellow uniforms for their home opener and played pretty snazzy, especially late in the third quarter when they began opening up a 17-point lead. The Pistons rallied in the final quarter, before Iguodala closed the door with two baskets and a pair of free throws.

Greg Monroe scored 27 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons, who dropped their fourth straight. Detroit and Washington (0-2) are the only winless teams left in the NBA this season.

"We showed a lot of fight," Monroe said. "We have to push through. At that point, three minutes left, seven-point game, that's definitely a winnable game. We have to find a way to win tight games like that."

Early in the fourth, Iguodala and Corey Brewer hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Nuggets a 96-80 lead. Moments later, JaVale McGee brought the crowd to its feet with a thunderous dunk off a lob from Andre Miller.

The Nuggets appeared to be cruising to the win with 7:41 remaining, but the Pistons made things interesting when Jonas Jerebko stole the ball from Iguodala and went in for the dunk.

Iguodala turned the ball over again when he couldn't find anyone to pass the ball to and traveled.

Then, he began his scoring spree, leading coach George Karl to quip after the game that he would be all right with Iguodala doing that all the time, earlier in the game even.

But Karl understands why Iguodala is slowly integrating his way into the offense. It's just his style.

"He's not going to shake the boat," Karl said. "He's going to figure out how we like to play, and figure out what's a good shot and what's not a good shot."

McGee finished with 16 points while Ty Lawson and Kenneth Faried each added 15.

The Pistons played their third of a winding six-game road swing. They return to California on Wednesday night to play Sacramento, before going to Oklahoma City and finishing up in Houston.

Rodney Stuckey came into the game in a shooting funk, hitting just 1 of his last 23 jumpers. But he found his range against the Nuggets as he finished with 17 points.

"He will always be a big part of our success," Monroe said. "We need him to play like he did tonight, attacking the goal, getting to the free throw line. It was good to see that."

Like Stuckey, Gallinari was struggling with his form. He spent nearly 90 minutes after Monday's practice going through shooting drills designed to restore his confidence. He had it going early, but fell off as the young Italian forward had eight points on 3 of 11 shooting.

The Nuggets led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but could never pull away from the pesky Pistons. Kenneth Faried scored 12 points in the first half to send Denver into the locker room with a 58-51 lead at intermission.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said he's trying to get his team to buy into the concept of being more unselfish.

"All the best teams are," Frank said. "Look, who's the most coachable player on the Spurs? Tim Duncan. Who's the most coachable player on the Celtics? Kevin Garnett. Who's the most coachable player in Oklahoma City? Kevin Durant. Who's most coachable player of the Miami Heat? LeBron James. This is not calculus. This is not trying to figure out the next Pythagorean theorem.

"This is easy: Your players have to unite and inspire by how they play. It's that simple."

Notes: Pistons F Corey Maggette sat out a fourth straight game with a strained left calf. ... The Pistons were 6 of 12 from behind the 3-point line. ... Former Nuggets F LaPhonso Ellis brought out the game ball before tipoff. ... The Nuggets avoided their first 0-4 start since 1998. ... Denver outrebounded the Pistons 21-8 on the offensive glass.

Fresno workplace shooting leaves three dead, two injured

Police search the scene of Tuesday's workplace shooting in Fresno, Calif. (AP/Gary Kazanjian)

[Updated at 5 p.m. ET]

The death toll now stands at three from this morning's workplace shooting at a Fresno, Calif., meat processing plant.

Police say Lawrence Jones, 42, a discharged parolee shot four coworkers before shooting himself about 8:30 a.m. at Valley Protein, which makes poultry products.

Two victims and the gunman have died. Two others remain hospitalized.

"We're still trying to determine what provoked these actions," Police Chief Jerry Dyer told reporters at a news conference.

The Fresno Bee said the shooter had worked at the plant for 14 months. Employees told investigators that Jones, "did not appear to be himself when he came to work." Chief Dyer said the man was more than three hours into his shift when he pulled a handgun and began shooting. An estimated 60 people were at the business at the time of the shooting.

The Fresno Bee spoke to witnesses who saw factory workers running from the plant. Roger Medina told the newspaper that he was in a nearby McDonald's when a man wearing a meat cutter's vest came rushing in.

"He said, 'There's a guy shooting people over there,' " Medina said.

Joe Martinez, 45, was in the drive-through lane at the McDonald's and thought he heard a car backfire, the newspaper reported. But he knew it was something else when he saw a chaotic scene unfolding near the plant.

"It's the last thing you expect to see," Martinez told the newspaper. "It's very upsetting."

Nintendo Wii U vs. Nintendo Wii ... fight!

Nintendo Wii U vs Nintendo Wii fight!

The first thing we noticed about Nintendo's next console when we last got our hands on it was the length -- the Wii U is Nintendo's longest console yet. Sure, sure, there's a tablet controller and HD graphics and yadda yadda yadda. That's immaterial. What matters here, folks, is how the new hardware -- the console itself -- physically stacks up against the first Wii. As you'll see in our gallery, length is the least of the Wii U's changes: in the Wii U, Nintendo added two more USB 2.0 ports up front and rounded out its hard right angles, for starters. Around back, the port layout of the Wii is nigh-on identical with that of the Wii U, albeit with the fan moved an inch (or so) to the right, making space for HDMI output. This is an HD console, after all. Wonderfully, unlike the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii U includes an HDMI cable right out of the box. Not a huge deal, but it sure was a baffling move when Sony and Microsoft both skimped on such an important detail.

The only other change we spotted (outside of the power port being flipped from horizontal to vertical) is the lack of GameCube controller ports up top. Say sayonara to those old Wavebirds, as Nintendo's moving on to its new tablet controller and its updated Pro Controller. Take some super close-up looks at all the minute differences with us below.

Why We Don't Have Universal Electronic Voting ... - Business Insider

AP Images

Remember Florida's 2000 voting ballot fiasco?

In our increasingly paper-free society, it's surprising that only 25 percent of the country will use electronic voting systems this year, down from 40 percent in 2006.

Why the drop when we rely so much on technology in every other part of our lives? Tim Heffeman outlines several reasons in an article for Popular Mechanics:

  • They can be hacked: "Not during actual elections ? not even under real-world conditions ? but hacked nonetheless. In July 2003, a team of computer scientists from Johns Hopkins University announced that it had reprogrammed the market-leading Diebold AccuVote-TS by popping a lock and replacing the memory card."
  • They are expensive: "Paper and pencils cost relatively little. They require no maintenance. By contrast, touchscreens sell for roughly $6000 apiece... 'For every machine that's purchased,' one expert says, 'there's a picture of a schoolteacher who wasn't hired.'"
  • Prone to human error: "In 2004, 4438 votes in Carteret County, N.C., went missing. The hardware worked just fine, but local administrators had inadvertently programmed the software to accept fewer votes than the community required." And many other examples.
  • Hardware problems cause malfunctions: "They were plagued from the start by hardware problems. Machines overheated and shut down. Memory cards failed. Reboots erased votes."?
  • They don't leave physical records: "In a disputed election, voters [have] little choice but to trust the machines. If tallies were lost?to malfunction or malfeasance?there was no way to get them back." Efforts to create paper trails are problematic in themselves ? printers break, and there is plenty of room for human error.

In today's election, reports have been circling (including video) of an electronic voting machine that seems to be glitchy ? it only has a tiny area that can select Obama as president, otherwise a click on Obama's check-box results in a Romney vote. A report from MSNBC suggests that the machine has been taken out of use.

Even before Election Day, a fight over electronic voting machines has been brewing in the nation's biggest battleground state, Ohio. Many are up in arms after an alleged last-minute un-certified software update to the voting machines' "reporting tool," authorized by Ohio's republican Secretary of State. The changes are supposed to ease the reporting of results, not impact the tally.

Robert Fitrakis, a Green Party candidate for U.S. Congress, has asked a federal judge to block use of the machines in vote counting, according to Businessweek.

KHOI RATTA:?A couple who killed their teenage daughter by dousing her in acid spoke Tuesday of their sadness and regret at the attack which they said they carried out to protect family ?honour?.

The parents poured acid over 15-year-old Anusha at their home last Monday after seeing her looking at boys. The girl died two days later after suffering 70 percent burns, according to doctors.

Rights activists say more than 900 women were murdered last year after being accused of bringing shame on the family in some way.

Both parents have been arrested and Anusha?s mother Zaheen Akhtar, 42, speaking from her police cell in Khoi Ratta, around 140 kilometres (85 miles) north of Muzaffarabad, the main city in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, said she feared for the future of the rest of her children.

?I deeply regret my action. I am repenting as I should not have done this. She was very innocent. I feel like killing all my kids,? the mother of eight told AFP.

?My remaining children, including four girls and two boys, all under 10 years of age have been left alone and they have nobody out there except Allah the Almighty to look after them,? she said.

Akhtar said she and husband Mohammad Zafar feared Anusha would follow in the footsteps of her elder sister who they married off at 16 ?because people had been talking about her bad character? and who had cut off contact after moving to Karachi with her husband.

House painter Zafar, 53, said he brought Anusha inside to beat her after seeing her looking at two boys outside the family home, but now he was haunted by memories of the attack.

?We were upset by (the) character of our elder daughter and feared that Anusha might follow (in) her footprints,? he said.

?Anusha?s mother should not have done this. I cannot sleep and whenever I shut my eyes, I see Anusha?s burnt face.?

The parents waited two days to take Anusha to hospital, but Zafar insisted this was simply because they could not afford to take her until a local doctor gave him some money.

Prosecutors allege 5 women in general's sex crimes

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) ? U.S. Army prosecutors offered the first details of a rare criminal case against a general, alleging in a military hearing Monday that he committed sex-related crimes involving four female officers and a civilian.

A hearing on evidence in the case against Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair began Monday at Fort Bragg, home to the 82nd Airborne Division. Officials said the Article 32 hearing, similar to a grand jury proceeding in civilian court, was expected to last at least two days.

But before prosecutors could start presenting their case, defense lawyer Lt. Col. Jackie Thompson said military investigators had violated his client's rights by reading confidential emails he exchanged with his lawyers and wife discussing the accusations against him.

Under questioning from Thompson, the lead investigator for the case acknowledged she had read the confidential e-mails, violating the terms of the subpoena used to obtain them from Sinclair's service provider. Those e-mails were later turned over to prosecutors, who are barred from seeing Sinclair's communications with his counsel.

Thompson then asked Criminal Investigative Command Special Agent Leona Mansapit if she had the resources she needed to conduct a proper investigation in Sinclair's case.

"Probably not, sir," Mansapit replied. "I wish I had."

The defense is asking the officer conducting the hearing, Maj. Gen. Perry L. Wiggins, to either require all new prosecutors to be assigned or that the case be thrown out.

Sinclair faces possible courts martial on charges including forcible sodomy, wrongful sexual conduct, violating orders, engaging in inappropriate relationships, misusing a government travel charge card, and possessing pornography and alcohol while deployed.

He served as deputy commander in charge of logistics and support for the division's troops in Afghanistan from July 2010 until he was sent home in May because of the allegations.

The sex-related accusations against Sinclair range from forcing a female officer to perform oral sex to having an extramarital affair with a civilian woman. Sinclair is married and adultery is a crime under the military code of justice.

In one instance, prosecutors also said that Sinclair threatened one woman's military career if she refused his advances. Later, prosecutors alleged that he threatened her life and the lives of her relatives if she told anyone about his actions.

When other officers questioned how the general spoke to women under his command, Sinclair was reported by prosecutors to have replied, "I'm a general. I'll say whatever the (expletive) I want."

Prosecutors alleged the general's illegal acts took place between 2007 and 2012 in places including Iraq, Afghanistan and Germany, as well as Fort Bragg and Fort Hood in Texas.

The Army had kept details secret until now in the rare criminal case against a high-ranking officer. That is different from other high-profile case where Army prosecutors were quick to release charging documents.

In March, the Army quickly released charge sheets laying out evidence against Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, the soldier accused of gunning down 17 Afghan civilians during a massacre in southern Afghanistan.

The first Article 32 hearing in Bale's case also began Monday across the country in Washington at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle.

There have been only two other court-martial cases against Army generals in recent years.

Before prosecutors can present evidence to support the accusations against Sinclair, much less move to a courts martial, Wiggins must decide whether to move forward with the Article 32 hearing.

"The investigators were tainted, and they tainted the prosecutors," Thompson told Wiggins. "They bungled the investigation, and if you leave them in place, they will bungle the prosecution as well."

A visibly flustered Lt. Col. William Helixon, the lead prosecutor, was put in the uncomfortable position of calling two of his fellow prosecutors to the witness stand to deny they had read the privileged e-mails. The defense learned of the apparent violation by spotting the e-mails among 16,000 pages of evidence turned over by the prosecution earlier this month.

Wiggins called a recess until 4 p.m. to consider what happens next.

It said the game combines accessible gameplay and a fantasy setting with theoretical and computational physics research.

?

Visual effects of special relativity gradually become apparent to the player and increase the challenge of gameplay, it added.
?

Effects rendered in real time include:

?

  • the Doppler effect (red- and blue-shifting of visible light, and the shifting of infrared and ultraviolet light into the visible spectrum)
  • the searchlight effect (increased brightness in the direction of travel)
  • time dilation (differences in the perceived passage of time from the player and the outside world)
  • Lorentz transformation (warping of space at near-light speeds)
  • runtime effect (the ability to see objects as they were in the past, due to the travel time of light)

?

"Players can choose to share their mastery and experience of the game through Twitter," MIT said.

?

OpenRelativity

?

OpenRelativity is a set of tools used for simulating the effects of traveling near the speed of light in the Unity3D game engine.

?

The MIT said its team is refining the documentation, usability and features in OpenRelativity, targeted for release as a free, open-source package in 2013.

?

It will allow others to produce more simulations and games about traveling near the speed of light.

?

System requirements

?

"A Slower Speed of Light" may require PCs using an Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 or Core i7 (2.8GHz clock speed); Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion); AMD Radeon HD 6970M/AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4850/Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT; and 8GB RAM.

?

But MIT said some users have reported that the game has been able to run on Windows XP with as little as 2GB RAM.

?

It added a bug will crash the game on computers with some Intel graphics chipsets.

?

Game premise

?

A separate article on Geek.com said the object of the game is to collect 100 floating orbs.

?

"Each time you collect an orb the game artificially lowers the speed of light. Walking is no longer an easy stroll through town, but a relativistic adventure," it said.

?

"This game really is awesome, and it even teaches you about physics. High school physics teachers, take note," it added. ? TJD, GMA News
