Be Informed Before Buying Auto Insurance By Reading This Article ...

When working with insurance companies over the telephone to receive quotes, keep your driver?s license information, vehicle information and current policy handy. Many companies require information from these sources to provide an accurate quote and having them handy speeds the process up for you and ensures you are providing accurate information to the insurance carrier.

Did you know that a simple feature on your automobile like anti-lock brakes entitles you to an insurance discount? It?s true; the safer your vehicle is, the less you will ultimately have to pay for auto insurance. So when you?re shopping around for a car, spending a little extra for safety features is rewarded in the long run via lower premiums.

A lot of people have speeding and parking tickets that they?re not even aware of until they attempt to get a new auto insurance policy. To avoid this money trap, be sure to check with your local state office to receive a copy of your full driving record. This will let you know if there are any unpaid tickets you need to handle.

To keep your car insurance premiums to a minimum, reduce your plan to only comprehensive coverage when a car or cars are parked. If you are not currently driving a car but still want to keep it protected from vandalism or damages related to natural disasters, then all you need is comprehensive coverage.

For your service to your country there is often times great benefits, one of them is auto insurance discounts. Practically every insurance company will offer good discounts to service men and women. So if you have been or are serving our country, do not forget to mention this to the person quoting you a policy.

To lower your overall cost consider paying your insurance premium in full. Many insurance companies tack on fees for customers who make payments month to month. Your company may offer several payment option plans, but generally the less payments you make the more money you save. Some companies even offer an additional discount for enrolling in automatic renewal.

It is important that you keep your car safe from automobile thieves in order to keep your car insurance rates low. If your car gets stolen (especially more than once), insurance companies will consider your car to be at high risk, thus the amount of your insurance premium will greatly increase.

When talking with your agent about auto insurance coverage be sure to ask about discounts. Many insurance companies offer discounts for various things that could bring down the cost of your coverage. Some of the things that insurance companies offer discounts for are student discounts, anti-theft devices installed on the vehicle, low mileage, and good driving records.

Everyone knows that a Ferrari is an expensive car, but what you may not know is that the insurance will be vastly more expensive as well. If you have your heart set on a car like this, make sure that you consider the increased prices of the insurance as well. At times it can be as much as 3 times the price of a normal car.

Always check with the state insurance department before you sign an application for automobile insurance. You want to make sure that the company you are working with is licensed in the area that you live in. If they aren?t, you may not receive any help after an accident.

When you are shopping around for auto insurance policies, watch the amount, take note of any quotes. The competition between companies is fierce, so you need to find and compare different quotes from many carriers. Some policies might have the same coverage and deductibles, but the six-month quotes could vary between ten and twenty percent between the companies.

When it comes to selecting an auto insurance policy, education is key. Finding the information you need can sometimes be confusing though. Sometimes sources are biased and sometimes information is not accurate. In this article we hope that we have helped to explain some of the most important terms. In addition, the tips that we have provided can help to make your selection process easier.

North Korea reports serious drought

NAMPHO, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea is reporting a serious drought that could worsen already critical food shortages, but help is unlikely to come from the United States and South Korea following Pyongyang's widely criticized rocket launch.

North Korea has had little rain since April 27, with the country's western coastal areas particularly hard hit, according to a government weather agency in Pyongyang. The dry spell threatened to damage crops, officials said, as the country enters a critical planting season and as food supplies from the last harvest dwindle.

In at least one area of South Phyongan Province where journalists from The Associated Press were allowed to visit, the sun-baked fields appeared parched and cracked, and farmers complained of extreme drought conditions. Deeply tanned men, and women in sun bonnets, worked over cabbages and corn seedlings. Farmers cupped individual seedlings as they poured water from blue buckets onto the parched red soil.

"I've been working at the farm for more than 30 years, but I have never experienced this kind of severe drought," An Song Min, a farmer at the Tokhae Cooperative Farm in the Nampho area, told the AP.

It was not clear whether the conditions around Nampho were representative of a wider region. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said it had not yet visited the affected regions to confirm the extent and severity of the reported drought.

North Korea has suffered chronic food shortages for the past two decades because of economic and agricultural mismanagement as well as natural disasters. A famine in the 1990s killed an estimated hundreds of thousands of people.

The country's past appeals for food aid have been met with some skepticism, however, amid concerns that aid would be diverted to the military and Pyongyang elite without reaching the hungry.

The U.S. government suspended food handouts to North Korea in 2009 after Pyongyang expelled foreign food distribution monitors.

In February, the U.S. reversed course and agreed to provide 240,000 metric tons of food aid in exchange for a freeze in nuclear and missile activities.

However, the deal collapsed after North Korea launched a long-range rocket last month in what it called a failed attempt to send a satellite into space to study the weather.

The launch was widely criticized by the United States and others as a thinly disguised attempt to test missile technology in violation of both the U.S. food deal and U.N. bans on North Korean ballistic tests. The launch drew U.N. Security Council condemnation.

"The United States would like to get to a place where we could once again contemplate providing nutritional assistance to North Korea," Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy for North Korea, said last week. "Sadly, that is not the case right now, in the wake of their decision, in March, to announce" the rocket launch.

South Korea's conservative government has cut off large-scale direct food aid to North Korea since taking office in 2008, saying Pyongyang should first take steps toward nuclear disarmament.

North Korea's dry spell is expected to last until the end of the month, the country's State Hydrometeorological Administration said.

Bureaucrats and workers have been mobilized to irrigate farms, repair wells and keep water-pumping equipment operating, state media reported.

Seedlings are being moved from seed beds to the fields, where they need enough moisture to form strong roots, Percy Misika, the Food and Agriculture Organization's representative for China, North Korea and Mongolia, said Monday from Beijing.

"Any dry spell at this critical time means the seedlings are definitely going to wilt away, and there will be no harvest at the end of the day," he said.

Misika said FAO officials are trying to visit areas suffering from a lack of rain. "If it's going to last for one or two weeks more, it's going to be critical, but if it's a shorter period of time there could be hope," he said.

Droughts are common in spring, winter and autumn in North Korea, the FAO said in a special report late last year. Climate change has led to more extreme weather, making winters colder, summers packed with more intense rain and typhoons, and droughts more frequent and prolonged, it said.

South Korea's Korea Meteorological Administration said it could not confirm the dry spell without on-the-ground equipment, though satellite photos have shown no big rain clouds over North Korea since late April. North Korean dispatches sent to an international weather center also show the country has had little rain over the past month, spokesman Jang Hyun-sik said in Seoul.

Kim Griego

Kim Griego

We knew this would be a tough primary race with three strong candidates vying to represent Democrats in the general election. What we didn?t expect was that it would turn so negative and that Eric?s opponents would attack him so personally.

When my husband Eric and I decided that he was going to get into this congressional race, it was a big decision for our family. Our son Lucas is three years old and we both wanted to make sure we would be there for him. As a special education teacher, I know how important those early years are in a child?s life. We decided together that it was the right thing to do for our community.

We live in the house Eric grew up in Barelas. He has led the youth choir at his neighborhood church for the last 10 years and spent the last four years leading the state?s most prominent children and family advocacy organization. Almost every day, we drive by the place he went to Head Start, the public schools he attended and the place his single mother worked.

Growing up in a single-parent home shaped his values. As an Albuquerque city councilman, Eric led the fight against predatory lending, to increase the minimum wage for working families and for campaign finance reform. As a state senator he took on establishment conservative Democrats to try to pass early childhood funding, protect public education and eliminate tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations.

We knew this would be a tough primary race with three strong candidates vying to represent Democrats in the general election. What we didn?t expect was that the primary would turn so negative and that Eric?s opponents would attack him so personally. As his wife and as a woman, I am so disappointed and disgusted that Michelle Lujan Grisham and some of her prominent supporters including Diane Denish have decided to attack his character and motivation for running.

Rather than focus on the issues?

Rather than focus on the issues, Michelle has used her staff, surrogates and her allies in the conservative media to bring up old issues related to traffic tickets, Eric?s work on children?s issues, and even his hard work taking on establishment politicians in the Senate.

During the televised debate last week, Michelle and Marty Ch?vez seemed to coordinate an attack on Eric?s work on behalf of kids and families ? questioning his motivations. Instead of taking the high road, Michelle used the debate as an opportunity to question his character and commitment to kids and families.

Michelle has also criticized him for taking on these progressive fights in the Senate. Eric led fellow progressive Democrats in some of the toughest battles for working families. Sadly, because of establishment politicians and conservative Democrats, we could not pass legislation to provide adequate funding for early childhood, our schools were not adequately funded, and the wealthiest New Mexicans and out-of-state corporations were spared from paying their fair share.

The reason why almost every group representing working people ? from the teachers to nurses to public employees ? have endorsed Eric in this race is because they know his record and his character. They know he took on the tough fights many of his colleagues were not willing to take on, because of politics or fear of retribution from powerful establishment legislators.

The best person to fight for women and families

Michelle Lujan Grisham and her surrogates have suggested that only she can fight for women and families. I resent that as a woman. Eric has spent his career on the front lines of fighting for women and families as an advocate, an elected official and an active member of his community.

I hope other women and mothers will reject the attacks that Michelle Lujan Grisham and her conservative allies in the media and elsewhere have launched against Eric. I know him best. I have watched him as a loving father, dedicated husband and passionate fighter for kids who came from families like his. Those who know his heart know he is the best person to fight for women and families in Congress.

Kim Griego is Eric Griego?s wife, mother to Lucas their 3-year-old son, and has worked with and for young children with special needs and their families for 20 years. She currently works for the Albuquerque Public Schools in the Special Education Department.

Z. S. Associates a unique brand of consulting firm that indulges in sky-scraping quality work and provides the precise quality of service to its clients. At Z. S. Associates employees are staffed on numerous projects that include diverse tasks making them heterogeneous and not monotonous. The average salary of an associate consultant at Z. S. Associates is $85,871 (Source- Glassdoor).

?

So how do you create an impact on the company with your cover letter and resume?

?

We go by the saying ?Your first impression is your last impression? and your cover letter and resume are the foremost notion of yourself for the recruitment consultants. It is important to tailor your cover letter and resume according to the company?s services and requirements. Your resume should be structured according to the criteria mentioned below:

?

  • Why are you interested in consulting and Z.S. Associates in particular?
  • Give examples from your skill set that should facilitate your chances of working with Z.S. Associates consultants?
  • Why should Z.S. Associates employ you?

?

There are numerous ways to construct a resume but it is important to stress on those skills having more efficacy. Your resume is a pre-eminent avenue to emphasize your skills. Make sure your resume covers the basic criteria like:

?

  • Scholastic qualifications:
  • Draw attention to your educational qualifications, your GPA scores and exam grades achieved, research topics, scholarly accomplishments like honors or accolades.

  • Work experience: It is imperative to bear in mind that your experience explains a lot about your skills and your ability to work in a high pressured and diverse environment. Describe your work experience, what responsibilities you undertook and the outcome of your work.
  • Leadership activities: If you have undertaken any extra-curricular activities emphasize them in your achievement section especially those riveting leadership experiences. Companies are very keen to know if you have the ability to take the lead on projects.
  • Exceptional skills: If you have undertaken any language course certificates it is important to briefly detail your foreign language expertise or other skills.

?

Recruitment process:

?

Like every company the recruitment process at Z. S. Associates is typical comprising of two rounds. Z.S. Associates conduct an amalgamation of several interviews that comprise of case based and meticulous question and answer sessions.

?

  • Online application: The online application involves submitting your details, cover letter and resume. You will be required to undertake an online test to determine your analytical skills.

?

Well, should you be successful via your online application you will be intimated for a screening interview with an HR professional to confer about the details of your resume as well as supporting your interest in the company. This would involve a preliminary screening of each selected candidate.

?

  • First Round: The initial round involves two back to back interviews that are case based and behavioral interviews. The interviews will focus mainly on key areas:

?

-????????? character attributes

-????????? resume questions

-????????? communication capability

-????????? business questions

?

Your character attributes are basically personality trait questions. The character and resume questions are conducted with an effort to determine how strongly your skill set matches those critiqued for an affluent career. While interviewing the candidate companies want to see the real you. Do not attend the interview enacting a part of a consultant. It is important to be yourself. They are on a hunt for brilliant, performing individuals. It is your duty to impress them and show them that you are the candidate they are seeking.

?

Be sure to memorize your resume entirely. Your answers to the resume questions will be based on your academic and work experience. Companies want to know how you can relate these experiences in the consulting industry. Illustrate with examples highlighting your unique selling points. They seek for substantiation of quantitative talent and superior scholastic performance. It is important to carry a copy of your resume to be entirely prepared for the interview. This is an opportunity to put up a best representation of you.

?

Your case based interview will comprise of communication and business questions where your ability to commune an idea succinctly and accurately and your wide-ranging knowledge about business processes and perception will be assessed. In the case interview session you will be necessitated to apply your analytical skills to a project scenario. You will be required to analyze a business situation, amalgamate information and develop and communicate recommendations. It?s prudent for you to place high emphasis on structuring your case study.

?

It is important to attend workshops on case studies. For interviews and case studies try preparing in groups along with your friends. Involve yourself in case studies with different people so as to attain various perspectives to case study solutions. It is important to be practical in case interviews. Suggest various possibilities. Speak pertinent information but more than the interviewer. Try to get acquainted with frequently used business jargons and be confident. It is important to lead the discussion thus exhibiting your leadership skills but do keep in mind that others should be encouraged to give their opinion. Most of all it is essential to be yourself during the entire process.

?

  • Second / final Round: Your final interview will be conducted at one of the firm?s offices. If you have been provided with an opportunity to attend an interview at the office means you are under consideration for a position. You will be assessed on a sequence of sessions evaluating your skills and fit with Z.S. Associates. Your performance at the final interview will determine whether or not you will receive an offer from the company. As we have said in our earlier?blog?the key to clearing an interview is practice.

?

You can also register at Interview-Bay for the mock interviews conducted by the alumni of Z.S. Associates. Our interviewers will help you practise for the interview with their meticulous verbal and written feedback.

Manson Family Recordings Made By Charles 'Tex' Watson Sought By LAPD (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES -- Police want to review audio recordings of conversations between a Manson family member and his attorney as detectives search for information about unsolved killings.

Los Angeles detectives seeking the material are merely practicing due diligence after receiving a tip that the recordings and other items in the estate of now-deceased lawyer Bill Boyd, who once represented Charles "Tex" Watson, were becoming available, LAPD spokesman Andrew Smith said.

"This whole thing has gotten totally blown out of proportion," Smith said, commenting on a report that first appeared on KNBC-TV.

Homicide detective Dan Jenks and Lt. Yana Horvatich, who made the request, have no specific information on what might be in the recordings, but they want to examine them, Smith said.

In their letter, they said they believed Watson discussed unsolved murders with his lawyer.

The audio recordings were previously made available by Watson to the co-author of his book, "Will You Die for Me? The Man Who Killed for Charles Manson Tells His Own Story." The book contains no information on unsolved murders.

The book features gruesome, detailed account of Watson's role in the killings of actress Sharon Tate and six other people. It also discusses Manson's murderous plans for those killings and includes sections on the formation of the Manson Family cult, Watson's family history in Texas, and his complete devotion to Manson.

He said he agreed to murder for Manson without question and felt no remorse afterward. He also noted that he was under the influence of LSD during most of the time he was with Manson.

Boyd, a lawyer hired to represent Watson by his parents, conducted a long fight to prevent his extradition to California from Texas, where Watson went after the murders.

By the time Watson arrived, he was not speaking and was ruled to be insane. He was committed to a mental institution for a year before he was found fit to stand trial separately from Manson and three women followers.

Watson, now 65, was convicted of the seven murders. All four defendants were sentenced to death but saw their sentences commuted to life when the death penalty was briefly outlawed in 1972.

Testimony at the Manson trial cast Watson as Manson's chief lieutenant, the cruel killer who confronted the pregnant Tate and her friends and announced, "'I'm the devil and I'm here to do the devil's work."

Police requested about eight hours of recordings of Boyd and' Watson that were made when Watson returned to Texas after the killings, according to KNBC-TV. The request was made in a letter dated March 19 and was included in a U.S. bankruptcy filing involving Boyd's law firm in Texas, the station said.

"The LAPD has information that Mr. Watson discussed additional unsolved murders committed by followers of Charles Manson," said the letter written to a bankruptcy court trustee in Tyler, Texas. "It is requested that the original recordings be given to the LAPD in order to determine if information regarding unsolved murders was included in the recordings."

A hearing on the request is scheduled Tuesday in Texas. Smith said Los Angeles detectives will not be attending the hearing.

"They've made the request," he said. "If it is granted, they will examine the materials."

KNBC says the audio remained private until Watson authorized its sale to his co-author to help cover unpaid legal fees.

In November, Watson was denied parole from for the 16th time and ordered to continue serving his life sentence. He married and divorced in prison and has four children from conjugal visits.

Community Voices: Nostalgic for days gone by

Posted: Saturday, May 26, 2012 12:00 pm | Updated: 11:14 am, Fri May 25, 2012.

I become nostalgic about certain periods of my life. This is common in my generation and in pretty much all generations at some point.

I am working on my seventh decade, which has me looking back to some very eventful years in our world. In my life, there have been four major conflicts that have taken at least four different generations to foreign lands to fight. We never truly won any of those conflicts and I have no desire to go back to any of those days.

There have been 10 recessions during my lifetime. While some of them were short lived (one year), all of them injured the working class in this nation. However, the current Great Recession is the longest since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

When I was growing up years ago and working for 90 cents an hour, I was oblivious to most of the economic problems of the ?50s and ?60s, and some portions of the ?70s and ?80s. Since taking on the duties of becoming a husband and a father, I have experienced the full force of the downturns of the ?90s, 2000s and 2010s. Granted, I have enjoyed some prosperous days; however, I am not sure that I want to experience the pain of a recession so that I can enjoy the fleeting feeling of elation associated with prosperous days.

There have been 12 presidents since I was born; six democrats and six republicans. During that time we have had three crises in office. One president was assassinated, one resigned due to scandal and one went through an impeachment process. I wish I could forget how distressing these very visible national events were to me and to our nation as a whole. I definitely would not want to go back to those days.

But here is a short list of the things for which I am nostalgic:

1. A day when corporations were not citizens

2. A day when the next generation was considered in fiscal policy

3. A day when our national reputation was less soiled

4. A day when debt was not the basis for our national prosperity

5. A day when compromise was not considered to be a four letter word

6. A day when we were unified to do great things like in the cases of the space race and development of a national highway system

7. A day when our leaders could really lead

8. A day of great vision ? maybe just living out the vision of our nation?s founders: the land of the free and the home of the brave

In the end, I want to help create a better day for my children and grandchildren. I am looking for women and men of vision and courage, and I plan to follow them.

Brittle Diabetes | health article

It is very complicated for a doctor to treat, and most people that have brittle diabetes see an endocrinologist. This is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of complex diabetes problems along with other endocrine disorders.

Brittle diabetes, as we now know it, can be difficult not only for the patients but to the family and health care team. While this condition most frequently occurs in the age group of 15-30 years old, there have been reports of this condition afflicting the elderly.

Before proceeding to the brittle diabetes update, let us remind ourselves of what this term means. It is a term used when the blood glucose level swings from low to high and vice versa. It is also called unstable or labile diabetes. Although some have to accept a life with this roller coaster ride, there is good news.

That said, it is not the end of the world; it is just a challenge one has to meet. The key to achieving a blood glucose level to as normal target as possible without severe hypoglycemia is lifestyle. It is all about consistency in lifestyle, in carbohydrate intake, and insulin injections and exercise. If all the aforementioned are constant, chances are the blood sugar level will be stable.

This method is supposed to keep blood sugars within the target range. A majority of participants of this study were able to attain A1c reading of less than 7.5% by using insulin therapy for the brittle type 1 diabetes. Study participants with this result were able to prevent the life-threatening complications without increasing the chances of hypoglycemic events.

Recognized onset between 25 and 64 years (Adult Diabetics). Growth onset, insulin-dependent diabetes may occur up to the age 22 or 23 years, but between 20 and 35 years, such cases merge into the adult-onset cases that are much less insulin-dependent. These patients begin with variable symptoms of diabetes and may or may not need insulin.

Don?t forget you?re working with a food, not a medicine. If they?re going to have a treat, they can drink an extra dose of Original Limu to help balance it. They need to keep track of their Blood Sugar levels anyway so increasing the Limu until it works for them is not a big deal. Original Limu can be very flexible!

It is a life-long disorder that can happen in children or adults. It is a totally different disease than Type 2. Type 1 diabetes occurs normally in children, adolescents or young adults, and most often at puberty. This type of diabetes is also called insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes.

Glucose from digested food circulates in the blood throughout the body as a ready source of energy for cells. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin effectively allows glucose the enter into cells. Some of the glucose in the body is stored as a source of energy in the form of glycogen. With insulin resistance, the glucose remains in the blood and does not enter cells.

The winner of 'American Idol' is ...

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

Finalists Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez on the season finale.

?American Idol? voters sure love guys with guitars.?Phillip Phillips continued the dominance of the guys on the show, winning the season 11 title and the million-dollar recording contract that goes with it. The normally laid-back singer was overwhelmed when host Ryan Seacrest announced the results, breaking down midway through his performance of ?Home? and leaving the stage to hug his parents.

It was a rare misstep for the former pawn shop worker from Georgia, who was never announced as one of the lowest vote-getters at any point. Though his voice lacked the power and range of some of the other finalists and he battled health problems throughout the season, he was the most contemporary of the contenders and should have a big seller with that first single.

Jessica Sanchez finished second, continuing an ?Idol? trend. No woman has won the show since Jordin Sparks in season six, and if the folks behind the show want to change that next year, they should probably avoid selecting the same types of singers to compete each season.

The two-hour, seven-minute finale took its time getting to that final envelope, with the decision made by a record 132 million votes. The show used some of those 127 minutes to make fun of the judges (though it largely spared the contestants, except for one early audition montage), and there were the usual live performances featuring selected contestants sharing the stage with music legends.

Mark Davis / Getty Images

Phillip sang with John Fogerty, breaking out the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits ?Have You Ever Seen the Rain?? and ?Bad Moon Rising.? If the post-"Idol" career doesn?t go as expected for the new champ, he?s got a future in a CCR or Dave Matthews cover band for sure.

Jessica, meanwhile, got original "Dreamgirl" Jennifer Holliday for ?I Am Telling You I?m Not Going.? It was one of the best performances of the season, though sadly for Jessica it came after the votes were already counted.

In addition, Joshua Ledet sang with ?the biggest inspiration of my life,? season three champion Fantasia Barrino, a duet that likely shattered glass throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Skylar Laine got Reba McEntire as her partner, and Hollie Cavanagh sang with Jordin Sparks. ?

For the group numbers, Chaka Khan came onstage with the women, while the legendary Neil Diamond joined the men and thrilled Red Sox fans everywhere by performing ?Sweet Caroline.?

And that?s not all! Viewers saw the first ?Idol? proposal in history, as Diana DeGarmo (season three finalist) said yes to Ace Young (season five seventh-place finisher). There was also a Bee Gees tribute from the ?Idol? guys, and Rihanna performed without a wardrobe malfunction or lyrics that caused the Fox censors to faint with worry. Jane Lynch was also spotted rocking out in the stands to the Chaka Khan set. Maybe there?s a ?Glee? guest appearance in her future.

Other notable moments in the finale:

  • Ford did wind up giving Phillip a car despite his bailing on most of the promotional videos. Also getting new wheels were Jessica, Phillip?s brother-in-law and Jessica?s family friend/music mentor. However, Ford did not pull an Oprah and give everyone in the audience a car.
  • The ?Idol? finalists showed that you can sing the phone book, as Randy Jackson always says, but it?s not exactly something that cries out for an iTunes download.
  • ?Idol? showed that it can indeed survive without J.Lo as a judge, as she was absent for a good portion of the broadcast to get ready for her two-song set.
  • Steven Tyler also took the stage along with Aerosmith for two tunes. Apparently, Randy, who was the only judge not to perform, doesn't have much pull with his former bandmates. Those Journey days must seem like they happened a very long time ago. Oh, wait. They did.

Edwidge Danticat | Full Stop

Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat won widespread acclaim in 1994 with the release of her first novel,?Breath, Eyes, Memory, and?has since established herself in multiple genres ? publishing everything from short stories, novels, criticism, essays and a memoir ? though she prefers fiction because ?in fiction, you are God.? Her work has been nominated multiple times for a National Book Award and she was awarded a MacArthur Genius grant in 2009.

I sat down with Danticat in Oberlin, OH to discuss Create Dangerously ? a collection of nonfiction essays and her latest published work ? as well as her thoughts on language, distance, immigration, and the roles of writers.

Liv Combe: My favorite story from Create Dangerously was your essay ?The Other Side of the Water.? At one moment, your aunt asks you not to write about the death of your cousin from AIDS. ?They say that everything they say to you ends up written down somewhere,? she says. You respond that you wish you could apologize, but that ?this immigrant artist, like many other artists, is a leech and I needed to latch on.?

As a writer, you call yourself at different times a liar, a parasite, a leech, yet you also say that your role is to expose people to the beauty and the love in Haiti that people don?t usually see in the news. Which role as a writer do you feel you are most often filling?

Edwidge Danticat: Probably all of the above. In a way, writers are like sponges. We?re always trolling for stories, whether we realize it or not. And it only gets difficult when the people around us catch on! They?re like, ?Oh, you?re writing a story, aren?t you?? And most of the time they?re wrong about the kind of story they think you?re writing.

But I feel like I?ve probably been all these things at different times. There are moments where you?re having an experience while at the same time, you?re outside of it, thinking what it would be like to write it. Maybe during those times you are more fully immersed, or maybe you?re not; you?re always this insider/outsider, because you?re sort of organizing things through narrative. And that doesn?t prevent you from having the full experience of surrendering to emotion, but you?re participating in things in two different ways. In this case, I?m still the cousin and this is still my aunt, but at the same time I?m seeing the story structure, the possibility of that. One of the things about writing is that your role keeps evolving all the time, and what you?re looking at [are] different things, [you?re looking at] different situations with different eyes.

What you said about the writer being an insider/outsider sounds a lot like how you talk about being an immigrant ? being stuck somewhere in between two countries. Do you think if you weren?t an immigrant, if you hadn?t moved to the United States, your writing would be entirely different? Would you see yourself as a writer in a different way?

You know, I?m a big reader, so I?ve been able to read people who have never left their homes, and I?ve been able to read people who have wandered in different parts of the world. I think there are advantages to both. I think being close to the ground, observing a situation closely in the every day allows you a certain perspective, but also being in between, you know, it?s what Julia Alvarez calls ?writing on the hyphen.? And I?ve always thought, for me, because I?ve benefitted from it so much ? being able to read people who write from this particular place, this in-between place ??I think people like that deserve their own literature. I think that?s an interesting place to write.

You only know what you know, so I don?t know what it would have been like ? but if I?d never left Haiti, it would have been a whole different experience. I would have been writing differently.

Yeah, I guess that question was kind of grossly hypothetical, wasn?t it??

I would be writing in a different language, for one thing! It wouldn?t have been in English.

You did?an interview with the?Fiction Writers Review?about a year ago?where you said, ?I sometimes think I am doing simultaneous interpretation while writing: the characters are speaking Creole, and I am interpreting for them.? I was wondering how your knowledge of language affects your writing, or the way you think about characters and dialogue. If you feel like you?re interpreting, does that change the way you write or think?

It?s interesting, because it?s just become the method. It?s just how it works. You know? It?s like, okay, this is how we function. It?s simultaneous to the point where I?m not even thinking about it. Like, I know that the people are not speaking the language, they?re not . . . it?s like watching these movies. You have two choices. You?re watching the miniseries about the French Revolution. . . it?s on American television; sometimes they have a Napoleon with an accent. And sometimes, which I think is a better choice, it?s just regular English. Because you know it?s Napoleon, you know it?s an interpretation. So I think that?s how it is to me in terms of the most primal translation. It just happens at the same time that you?re writing.

For me, the wonderful thing about this situation ? and I guess that?s what?s great about American writing in my particular period of time ? is that I?m not the only one doing it. There?s Junot D?az, there?s Sandra Cisneros, there [are] all these people from other places who are immigrants or children of immigrants who are doing this in their own way. So, for me ? talk about feeling less alone as a reader, but also feeling less alone as a writer in that, okay, I belong to this sort of stew, and we?re all doing that. Some of us are rebelling against italics! And it?s just part of the mix. It is what it is. And, I mean, sometimes when the writing is going good, you?re so transported in your own world and in your own writing that it just flows from that place.

Because I think we?re translating anyway. You know, whether [or not] you?re writing from the same language, you?re selectively plucking out moments in a character?s life that?s leading to some kind of epiphany or conclusion. You?re certainly not reporting everything they do in the day; it?s still like we?re selecting when we write fiction. Or even when we write nonfiction; when you start a nonfiction piece about someone picking their nose, you?re trying to say something about that person! You know what I mean? Everything is sort of leading in a certain way. I think it?s just a different kind of selection.

Maybe it?s because [of] the way I live between languages, but I see language as a tool. Like any other thing in writing, it?s not necessarily a choice for me, I feel like it?s just one of the other things that happened. And something wonderful happens, too, when these language meet. Because when you come from another language, English is so new, in a way. And [because of] all the possibilities of it, and things you can bend, and things that you might be too shy to do in your own language. It?s very exciting.

In that same interview, you said that you first wrote creatively in English ? it just sort of happened that way and you continued with it. And you said, ?Maybe English also offers a veil, some kind of distance that makes me bolder.? And in?another interview in 2003 with? The Progressive, you said that the ?idea of just putting on a mask . . . was always something that was interesting to me because sometimes when we?re most shielded is when we?re boldest.? How does this idea of shielding yourself play into your concept of creating dangerously?

You know, that whole notion of creating dangerously I borrowed from Albert Camus, who in 1957 was saying, ?To create today is to create dangerously.? And one of the things that he says also is that the writer is like everybody else: you?re on the galley, and you?re sort of rowing your oar against a tide and you?re trying to stay alive. I think you can take that from the most extreme, when people are writing on prison walls, to the most mundane, where people are just [too] shy to write, [who have] no other dangers than being ridiculed.

When I started writing I used to think that whatever it takes to get you past that hump, past those fears in that moment and situation where you?re able to [begin writing] but some inner thing is preventing you, I feel like whatever it takes, [do it, even] if it means hiding out somewhere. And [writing] requires that, it requires so much time alone, it requires, you know, so much hiding to expose yourself. And that?s the thing about writing fiction: with fiction, you can lie. That?s why I call myself a liar, a liar in terms of the fiction world. In fiction you can lie to tell these other truths and tales to reveal other things. So [we must do] whatever it takes, in a way, to get us there.

You?ve written memoirs, essays, novels, short stories, articles. When you start formulating a story in your head, do you see it as a certain one of those, or is there a default sort of genre that you like to write in? Or maybe ?genre? isn?t the right world ? maybe something like ?form??

No, ?genre? is good. I mean, what I like most about the whole thing is the variety, the ability to have variety. I love writing fiction, probably more than other things because you have a kind of liberty with the material that you don?t have with nonfiction. I love being able to invent things. I love this ability to just invent, you know? So I love writing fiction: I love writing short fiction, I love writing long fiction.

But what I like most is not being told that, Oh, you just have to write this, you can only write that. I like being able to jump between genres, to do different things, because for me it keeps it all so exciting, and I feel like if I?m not doing this, I can be doing that.

In?a 2007 interview with NPR?you were called a ?literary ambassador? for Haiti. How do you feel about that title, and also the responsibility that comes along with it? The implication is that you?re speaking for an entire country.

I feel like ? because I?ve always lived near or in a Haitian community; in Haiti, obviously, when I was much younger, and then in the United States ??I know a lot of [Haitian] people. I know the whole range of the experience. I know that it?s not monolithic. So I?ve always seen myself as one of many people who can carry that title. (Remarkably, there [are] a lot of people who don?t know [that] Haiti [has] a huge amount of literature ? a little bit of it is in translation, but more could be.) So I never really saw myself as unique in this situation, because I know a lot of other people like me, who were writing like me. So I would say I?m one of many people like that.

I don?t think it?s useful or even accurate to say that one person can be a literary ambassador to any culture, because ultimately writers are writing from a singular point of view, and maybe others identify, and maybe others within your culture can be contrary. They can have totally opposite experiences. Sometimes ? and I see it in a lot of my friends from different cultures who are writing here now ? the harshest critics are people who are from the culture, people who know more, who know all the nuances. And in a way I think that?s very fair, because their expectations are a lot higher.

So, for me, knowing all that and living all that, I know that it?s impossible for one person to be the voice of any culture, especially a very layered and complicated one like Haitian culture.

Do you consider your writing political at all? You write about issues that are very political ? issues of immigration, AIDS, terrorism, natural disasters, corrupt governments.?

Well, saying it?s not political would also be political, in a way. Yeah, I consider it political. I mean, I don?t consider it like a tract ? except when I do write tracts, like op-eds and things like that! But I consider it political.

What I?m also interested in, especially in the fiction that I write, is creating vivid characters, engaging human beings. Because sometimes people say, ?Oh, it?s political, but it seems like you?re writing types,? [and] not just types, but stereotypes. I?m interested in writing about ordinary people in difficult situations: some of them romantic, some of them familial, some of them political.

Distance, whether it is death or immigration, is a theme that runs throughout a lot of your writing. In Create Dangerously you often mention the Creole phrase l?t b? dlo, which means, ?on the other side of the water,? and can refer to death or physical distance. Does distance scare you at all, or is it something that?s more comforting or liberating than it is frightening?

It?s both. You know, because I think that part of the distance is also longing ? longing for the physical landscape sometimes, longing for family members who are there, longing for some of the daily things you are missing in the lives of people you care about. And having this desire sometimes for your presence to be more ordinary, which I was more able to do when I was younger, to just kind of be there, just be hanging out. Visits tend to now be sort of purposeful, even the relaxing ones; they tend to be more purposeful because I?m like, ?Oh, I want my girls to see this, or see that,? you know. There?s also that kind of longing that comes with hyper-alertness ? ?I have to see this, I have to see all of that? ? especially in a place like Haiti that?s always changing.

[The distance isn?t always] comforting. There?s anxiety in it too. [Haiti] is identified for me by the people. Because what removes you from a place is just no longer having these personal connections, do you know what I mean? When my uncle died, for example, I lost a neighborhood, in a way. I lost a place to go back to. So I think that what keeps you bound, what keeps you connected, are these personal connections that are less easy to generalize in terms of the place. The place is created from ties with people you know, people you love. So at times parts of [the distance] are liberating, but the times with it are sort of [filled with] anxiety, filled with longing. One way that I fulfill part of that longing is visiting a place in my work ? sort of recreating my version of it in my writing. Because in the writing you can combine different places, you can combine different people and create your own kind of land, or versions of that land.
