Microsoft's Newest Office Arrives - Business Insider

The Windows 8 version of Office is officially here.

It comes in two flavors: a cloud version that is delivered over the Internet, Office 365, and traditional software that runs on your PC, previously known as Office 15, now called Office 2013.

Both of these come in a few versions too. Office 365 University is for college students, faculty and staff. It will cost $79.99 for a four-year subscription, which Microsoft points out comes to $1.67 per month.

There's also the Office 365 Home Premium version, which is a single subscription meant to cover a family, or up to 5 users.?Microsoft previously announced that it will cost about $100 a year, or $8.33 per month.

The downloadable-software versions also come in different versions: Office Home & Student 2013, Office Home & Business 2013, and Office Professional 2013. Those will cost $139.99, $219.99, and $399.99, respectively.

If you need Office for more than one computer in the house, it's obviously less expensive, at least at first, to buy the cloud version for $99 a year than to buy Office 2013 for multiple computers.

While it's true that you can also get a scaled-down version of Office for free via?Microsoft's SkyDrive, these new versions of Office are set up to work with Windows 8 touch devices.

Google Apps, which competes most directly with Office 365, is free for schools. For?businesses, it costs $50 per user per year.

Microsoft is releasing new business versions of Office 365 for Windows 8 on February 27.?

Twisters in Mississippi, Indiana, more forecast through Wednesday

(Reuters) - Severe weather hit the central and southeast United States on Wednesday, with tornadoes ripping through Mississippi and Indiana and strong winds toppling trees in Tennessee.

The National Weather Service said twisters touched down in Sardis, Mississippi, and heavily damaged homes in Solsberry, Indiana, wiping out power in the surrounding areas.

About 11,900 customers in central Indiana were without electricity because of the storm, utilities said.

Piles of debris and downed power lines blocked roadways in Indiana, including State Road 45 in southwestern Monroe County and State Road 43, which was closed from Solsberry to Hendricksville.

Several counties in Tennessee reported possible tornadoes overnight, but damage appeared to be minimal early on Wednesday, according to Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesman Jeremy Heidt.

Local officials reported spotty power outages, minor flooding in low-lying areas and some toppled trees and power lines. There were no confirmed storm-related deaths or injuries, Heidt said.

Forecaster said the violent weather was expected to barrel east throughout the day, bringing with it damaging winds of up to 70 miles per hour (113 km/h), hail and possibly more tornadoes.

The storms will drive down the morning's warmer temperatures with chillier air following in their wake, said meteorologist Dan Depodwin on Accuweather.com.

Luxury homes in Japan with Sotheby's International Realty ? Real ...

The name Sotheby?s is well known as an auction house that dates back 270 years, but many people may not be aware that it is also a high-end real estate brokerage company. Established in 1976, Sotheby?s International Realty began by offering its auction clientele real estate services. It currently has over 600 offices located in 45 countries and territories, giving clients unprecedented access to properties that span the globe.

In 2010, Sotheby?s International Realty opened its Tokyo office in order to make a full-scale entry into the rapidly expanding Asian market. Its 15-strong team provides a full range of real estate services in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

Japan Today meets with Chief Operating Officer Yutaka Takeda at the company?s new office in Hiroo Plaza to hear more about the business.

What is your background?

I was actually born in Hiroo, not too far from this office. I went to Seikei University?the same university as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. His elder brother was my classmate. My major was economics. After graduating, I worked for JAL for 30 years, in sales, marketing, as well as the group?s hotel and resort business. I joined Sotheby?s in June 2010.

What is Sotheby?s International Realty?s history?

Many clients of the auction house are interested in high-end real estate, so Sotheby?s International Realty was founded in New York in 1976 to look after their needs. At first, the focus was mainly in Europe and the United States. In the 2000s, the company started pushing expansion in Asia and as a result, branches opened in Hong Kong and Japan three years ago, and Taiwan opened last year.

We have a very strong alliance with the auction house and one of our strengths is our reputable brand name and access to the world?s wealthy individuals. While some clients are auction clients, we do have our own client base, as well.

How were the last two years?

2011 was a very difficult year because of the earthquake and fear of radiation. Inbound business dropped off. However, after the March 11 disaster, some Japanese felt, probably for the first time in their life, that maybe they need a place to escape to if there is another disaster. That fuelled demand for real estate overseas. As a result, we saw good growth in the latter half of 2012.

Where are your Japanese clients looking to buy?

Hawaii is definitely No. 1. Singapore is very popular, also. For high-end Japanese clients, Europe is in demand ? Monaco, Switzerland, Paris. There is also interest in the Gold Coast in Australia and New Zealand. Our sales outside of Japan are heavily connected to whether there are direct flights to those destinations from Japan. But even if there isn?t a direct flight, our strength is our international network ? 600 offices in 45 countries. So we can help you with your real estate needs very quickly.

Who are your typical Japanese clients?

All ages, really, ranging from retirees to people in their 30s. Many of our clients buy real estate overseas for investment or they might go to stay there once or twice a year. Time share is a very big market for Japan. I would say that there are nearly 40,000 Japanese owners who have purchased Hilton and Marriot time-shares in Hawaii. That gives you some idea of how important a market Hawaii is.

What about your inbound business?

Many of our clients come from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore. There are some Americans or Europeans married to Japanese, who are interested in buying property in Tokyo. While the demand is mainly for Tokyo, we do receive some inquiries for residences in ski areas such as Hakone, Karuizawa and ski areas such as Hakuba and Niseko.

Where do you see growth potential?

We wish to boost our business of selling more to foreigners in Japan. That?s why we have recently moved to this new office in Hiroo. Many foreigners recognize the brand name and often drop in. Our office is open seven days a week and we want to be more in touch with the foreign community. We are like a concierge and our experienced staff speak Japanese, English and Chinese.

We have a close relationship with our clients. When they are in Tokyo, they often drop in and have lunch and talk about the market, real estate. I think that is one of our unique points.

How do you market the brand?

Our head office issues a publication called Reside twice a year. The auction house has a publication eight times a year and they have a real estate section. Hong Kong has a publication six times a year and does direct mail to 20,000 wealthy individuals. Japan?s properties are included in all those publications. Besides that, we have editorial tie-ups with a number of Japanese publications. We use YouTube and Facebook, as well as our website.

More proactively, we started holding Hawaiian real estate seminars in December 2011. It turned out to be a very big success and we have since held seminars in Osaka and Nagoya, usually once every six months. The last one, which was a collaboration with CNBC/Nikkei, drew 160 people. Most were serious clients.

How do you find properties?

We have a strong relationship with developers and construction companies, so we keep up to date on the market. We also have a team who specialize in looking for available properties. There is a saying in this business that many properties become available due to the 3 Ds ? death, divorce and debt.

What is a typical day for you?

I show up around 9 a.m. After tending to emails, we have meetings. I am more involved in cross-border transactions because I have good connections all over the world from my JAL days. I often have lunches and dinners with clients. That is an important part of the job. Sometimes I work on weekends, if I meet foreign visitors and show them properties.

Link found between insulin sensitivity, cells' powerhouses: Mice with mitochondrial mutation live longer, have less fat

Jan. 28, 2013 ? If findings of a new study in mice are any indication, it might be possible to fine-tune cellular powerhouses called mitochondria, tweaking one aspect to increase insulin sensitivity, reduce body and fat mass, and even extend life. Exploiting this target could one day lead to novel treatments for type 2 diabetes -- an endocrine system disease that affects 8 percent of the U.S. population. The research also points to promising new avenues of investigation in the biology of aging.

The study, reported in The FASEB Journal by authors from the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio and the university's Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, found that diminished activity of a protein complex involved in mitochondrial function was associated with healthy changes in the mice. The median life span of this strain of mice is 20 percent longer.

Paradoxical

"This is an unexpected finding because you would think that something that decreases mitochondrial function would have a damaging effect, but instead we saw an increase in life span and beneficial metabolic effects," said lead author Deepa Sathyaseelan, Ph.D., research assistant professor of cellular and structural biology in the School of Medicine.

"The most important thing we noticed is reduced body weight and decreased fat mass in the mice," Dr. Sathyaseelan said. "We found that this decreased fat mass is due to increased fat utilization."

Fat utilization

Mitochondria produce an energy source called ATP that is necessary for the functions of life, everything from breathing to thinking. Additionally the cellular powerhouses are a major site of fat utilization, said study senior author Holly Van Remmen, Ph.D., professor of cellular and structural biology. Fat is an endocrine organ that performs many functions, and having it in the correct proportions is important for the body. Too much or too little fat is harmful.

The scientists also observed that mice with the mutation, in contrast to control animals, make greater numbers of new mitochondria. This is important because cells are constantly remodeling themselves, including mitochondrial overhaul.

Age-related

Mitochondrial dysfunction occurs with age and is associated with many age-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Dr. Sathyaseelan said the study "opens the door to new clues about how mitochondrial function might modulate insulin sensitivity," representing an important step for diabetes research.

Type 2 diabetes involves abnormalities with insulin, a hormone secreted by beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin helps the body store and use sugar from food, but in type 2 diabetes the body is insulin resistant, that is, it inefficiently responds to the hormone. With time the beta cells in diabetic patients start to die, resulting in less insulin to handle the demands. Levels of the hormone become progressively lower and sugar levels are increased progressively, damaging blood vessels and organs.

Understanding longevity

"I would also like to point out that these mice live longer," Dr. Van Remmen said. "For us they are very important from an aging standpoint. We want to understand how these animals can have added longevity, yet have a 60 percent reduction in a protein complex involved in mitochondrial function."

Dr. Sathyaseelan noted that life extension in association with decrease of the complex's activity is seen across species, including roundworms and flies. Shane Rea, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology at the Barshop Institute, is one of the first to make this discovery in the worms.

The Barshop Institute team obtained the study mice from an Italian institute where studies are ongoing. Dr. Sathyaseelan recently received a two-year, $140,000 grant from the American Heart Association to understand how mitochondrial dysfunction is related to insulin sensitivity.

Compensation for Philippine dictatorship victims

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Almost four decades after he was arrested and tortured and his sister disappeared into a maze of Philippine police cells and military houses, playwright Bonifacio Ilagan is finally seeing his suffering officially recognized.

A writer for an underground communist newspaper, Ilagan and thousands like him were rounded up by dictator Ferdinand Marcos' security forces after he placed the Philippines under martial law in 1972. Detentions, beatings, harassment and killings of the regime's opponents continued until Marcos was toppled in 1986.

Even though democracy was restored, it would take another 27 years for the Philippine Congress to vote on a bill awarding compensation and recognition to martial law victims. The bill was ratified Monday and will be sent to Pres. Benigno Aquino III for signing into law, said Sen. Francis Escudero, a key proponent.

"More than the monetary compensation, the bill represents the only formal, written document that martial law violated the human rights of Filipinos and that there were courageous people who fought the dictatorship," said a statement from SELDA, an organization of former political prisoners that campaigned for the passage of the bill.

Ilagan's story is more of a rule than exception among leftist activists of his generation.

"The torture started in the house. We were beaten up, punched and kicked," he said, recalling a police raid on his residence in April 1974 and the beginning of his two-year detention ordeal. He said he vomited blood after being kicked in the thighs and had the soles of his foot burned by an iron.

"The one episode in my torture that I cannot forget was when they ordered me to remove my pants and underwear and they inserted a piece of stick into my penis. 'Oh my God,' I said, this is one torture I could not bear,'" the 61-year-old said in an interview. He said that interrogators wanted him to decode documents and identify people in pictures that were seized from suspected communist activists.

"Compared to others, mine was not the worst torture," he said. "The others were electrocuted and injected with truth serum. ... But the threats continued."

Ilagan's sister, Rizalina, disappeared in 1976 along with nine other activists, many of them students involved in anti-Marcos publications, he said. One of the women arrested by the same government unit that he suspected was involved in his sister's abduction had escaped to recount her rape and torture. Ilagan said he has no doubt that his sister went through the same abuses.

His parents died still hoping his sister would turn up alive, but the family has found no closure, Ilagan said.

Lawmakers in two chambers of the Congress agreed last week on the text of the compensation bill.

Aquino is the son of an assassinated anti-Marcos activist and a mother who led the 1986 "people power" revolt that ousted Marcos and sent him into U.S. exile, where he died three years later without ever facing prosecution for human rights abuses.

Many of Marcos' men reinvented themselves as powerful politicians or businessmen, and not one was successfully prosecuted for any of the crimes allegedly committed during the martial law years.

Two martial law figures, former Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile and the deputy military chief of staff, Fidel Ramos, led a mutiny against Marcos as part of the 1986 revolt. Ramos later served as president from 1992 to 1998, and Enrile is currently the president of the Senate.

Despite cases filed by former political prisoners, "there have been no convictions of perpetrators," Marie Hilao-Enriquez, chairwoman of SELDA, said Monday.

The Marcos family, meanwhile, returned from exile in 1990s and again wields influence. Former first lady Imelda Marcos is a lawmaker, son Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcosis is a senator, and daughter Imee is a provincial governor.

"Governments after Marcos did not move or did not do anything to go after Marcos seriously, so we filed a case in Hawaii," Hilao-Enriquez said.

In 1992, victims won a class action suit against the Marcos estate in Hawaii.

Under the Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013, the 9,539 victims will be awarded compensation using $246 million that the Philippine government recovered from Marcos' ill-gotten wealth. But all claims will have to evaluated by an independent commission and the amount each will receive will depend of the abuse suffered.

"Finally, over two decades after the fall of the dictatorship, we will have a law that puts the responsibility of human rights abuses square on the shoulder of Marcos and provides justice for all those who suffered under his reign," said Rep. Walden Bello, a member of a congressional committee that drafted and approved the bill.

Ryan: Obama doesn't actually think 'we have a fiscal crisis?

Ryan (NBC)

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan lashed out at President Barack Obama on Sunday, saying the commander in chief does not have a full grasp of the budget problems facing the U.S. economy.

"I don't think that the president actually thinks we have a fiscal crisis," Ryan told NBC's David Gregory on "Meet The Press" in his first live interview since the 2012 presidential campaign, when he was Mitt Romney's running mate.

Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, said that while Democrats may have gotten higher taxes on the wealthy as part of the New Year's deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, that's all they'll get.

'"The president got his additional revenues," Ryan said. "So that's behind us."

"Are we for raising revenues? No we're not," he continued. "If you keep raising revenues, you're not going to get decent tax reform."

The former vice presidential candidate also addressed a pair politically-divisive issues: immigration reform and gun control. Via NBC:

Ryan, who has praised a bipartisan set of immigration reforms offered by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, said he was cautiously optimistic about the prospects for immigration reform this year. But Ryan said that Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike would closely watch Obama's speech on Tuesday in Nevada on that topic.

And of the president's gun control measures, Ryan suggested openness to embracing some measures--like requiring universal background checks on gun sales--while expressing skittishness toward other elements of the plan, like the ban on assault weapons.

And as far as his political aspirations for 2016 are concerned, Ryan said it's too early for him to talk about.

"I think it's just premature. I've got an important job to do," Ryan said. "I'll decide later about that."

Stores Hold Own Against Online Competition | Stuff.co.nz

Scorpio Books owner Dave Cameron

FACE TO FACE: Scorpio Books owner Dave Cameron says customers still prefer to buy books at the Riccarton store rather than online

Many quake-displaced Christchurch retailers turned to online sales, took their first foray into Facebook or at the very least beefed up their company websites as a way to keep their businesses alive after the February 2011 quake.

But many also found online selling was no silver bullet.

A new survey of 11,000 people in 11 countries by PricewaterhouseCoopers reveals why.

The report debunks what it calls the 10 myths of multichannel retailing, which include beliefs that social media will soon be an indispensable retail channel, online retail is cannibalising sales in other channels, and physical stores will become simply showrooms in the future.

In fact, social media is not likely to become an important retail channel any time soon, the survey shows.

Seven out of 10 respondents said they never shopped through social media platforms, although nearly 40 per cent of respondents were following their favourite brands or retailers online, up from 33 per cent last year, as brand lovers were using social media as a "warmup" for future online or physical store shopping excursions.

Nick Paulsen, owner of clothing boutique Clash, said the business used social media mainly to develop the brand and personality of the business but it did not equate to sales.

Clash's Facebook page has 1249 "likes" and is focused on personality and style, music and trends.

"Sometimes we post pics [of new products] but we are not putting price points on there.

"I really want to develop a high level of customer service.

"I believe interaction between customers and retail staff members is so important.

A Facebook community took time to grow and was not a quick fix, Paulsen said.

Social media had limited impact on sales so far. "It's not as reactive as people think."

According to the report, other myths are that physical stores will become mainly showrooms in the future, and online sales are cannibalising sales in other channels.

In fact, respondents said although they researched online, they still preferred to buy products at a physical store.

And shoppers were spending more with their favourite multichannel retailers, not just shifting some purchases to a different brand.

For example, 23 per cent of respondents surveyed said they researched consumer electronics online and then went to a store to buy the product, compared with only 2 per cent who did it the other way around.

Clash does not sell items online.

"To me, online shopping is a real trend.

"I believe people want that interaction with a staff member on the shop floor.

"Online shopping doesn't give you that."

Christchurch bookstore Scorpio is holding its own against online competitors.

Scorpio Books co-owner David Cameron said most sales still came from traditional sales at its physical stores.

Scorpio Books has a website and online sales capacity but online sales were only a small part of the business, Cameron said.

"We do have a Facebook page and we put some quirky stuff up there and we get some favourable responses.

"But it is still not a great marketing tool.

"Despite all the hype about new technology, there is still strong demand for a range of titles that people can come and inspect at their leisure."

Cameron said he expected the trend of online sales would continue to grow but for now online sales were a "relatively tiny" part of overall sales.

After the February 2011 earthquake he had thought the company might have to push online sales but once the business established itself in Riccarton, it had not been necessary.

"The bricks-and-mortar sales have kept up with what we were doing in town, which was a good surprise."

Savoir Lingerie and Swimwear owner Kirsten Billcliff does not place much faith in selling online or using social media to drive sales.

Billcliff said the Merivale swimwear and lingerie boutique used its website to provide customers with information but did not offer online sales because it wanted to maintain relationships with customers.

"We do have Twitter and Facebook. Twitter I barely use at all, and Facebook I use . . . as a medium to keep customers up to date with the latest arrivals in stock," Billcliff said.

"It's about having a relationship with a retailer.

"And specifically, lingerie - it is one of those particular purchases that can't effectively be done online.

"A lot of women are left fairly dissatisfied with online purchases."

Facebook was great for things like getting information out quickly but the business did not "push it".

"We work on the basis our customers are busy, intelligent people. We don't consider our business the be-all and end-all in anybody's life.

"People don't need to spend more time sat at a computer."

Since the earthquakes, customers were doing a lot more pre-purchase research on Savoir's website before coming into the store, because it was harder to get around town since the earthquakes.

Billcliff had improved Savoir's website gallery so customers could have a look online and then come into the store.

However, other Christchurch retailers are reporting strong growth in online sales, include gift and homewares retailer Redcurrent, fashion retailer Lynn Woods and larger companies such as outdoor gear retailer Kathmandu, department store chain Smiths City and clothing retailer Hallenstein Glasson.

And for Christchurch confectionery business The Fudge Cottage, online sales are growing and are likely to be a major part of the business's revenue stream before too long.

The Fudge Cottage managing director Kevin Burns said that after the business was forced to leave its central Arts Centre premises and move to the Bishopdale Mall, the business had become a bit isolated from its central-city customers.

To "fill the gap" created by less foot traffic in between special occasions and seasonal events, and to reconnect with former customers, Burns invested in a responsive, shopper-friendly website designed by Christchurch web design company LeftClick.

Internet orders are already about 10 per cent of total sales, and the business is looking to grow that.

It has a wide network of customers overseas and elsewhere in New Zealand and it has just had its first direct order from Australia.

MULTICHANNEL RETAILING MYTHS OF MULTICHANNEL RETAILING:

? Social media will soon become an indispensable retail channel. On its own, social media isn't likely to become an important retail channel any time soon.

? Physical stores will become mainly showrooms in the future. Many multichannel shoppers research online, but more still prefer to buy at a physical store.

? The tablet will soon overtake the PC as the preferred online shopping device. Shoppers are still overwhelmingly using their PCs to shop online.

? As the world gets smaller, global consumers are becoming more alike. A wide range of local differences in consumer behaviours exists.

? China is the future model of online retail. China is leading in some key trends, but its multichannel and online model is unique.

? Domestic retailers will always have a "home field" advantage over global retailers.. Foreign retailers are making inroads into consumers' lists of favourite multichannel retailers.

? Global online players such as Amazon and eBay will always have a scale advantage over local online players. Many domestic pure players are holding their own.

? Retailers are better positioned than brands because they are closest to the customer. Consumers are shopping directly from manufacturers and many no longer distinguish between retailers and favourite brands.

? Online retail is cannibalising sales in other channels. Consumers are actually spending more with their favourite multichannel retailers, not just shifting some purchases to a different channel.

? Low price is the main driver of customer spending at favourite retailers.Customers value quality, innovative brands over price.

France Launches Military Attacks in Mali and Somalia

France Launches Military Attacks in Mali and Somalia

U.S., Britain and other NATO states involved in imperialist onslaught against Africa

By Abayomi Azikiwe
Editor, Pan-African News Wire

France has launched two major military operations in both West and East Africa under the guise of fighting ?Islamic terrorism? on the continent. In Mali, French fighter jets and commandos have gone into operation in the north and central regions of the country and in the Horn of Africa nation of Somalia, a failed ?rescue? operation has resulted in the deaths of several commandos and the capturing of at least one soldier.

This is taking place in the immediate aftermath of the Obama administration?s declaration in late December that the Pentagon would dispatch over 3,500 troops to nearly three dozen states across Africa. The U.S., Britain and Denmark have stated that they are involved in the bombing raids in Mali where the former French colony has been effectively partitioned since March of 2012.

In the Malian bombings it has been reported that over 100 people have been killed in air strikes on the cities of Gao, Konno and at least three other areas. In Konno when the bombing by French jets began many people rushed to hide from the attacks.

According to the Globe and Mail, ?Some flung themselves into the river. Many did not survive?including three children who drowned in the river as they struggled to escape.? (January 13)

In another town in central Mali, Douentza, aerial bombardments have prevented victims from reaching the local hospital. There is no way for the French air force to distinguish between so-called ?Islamic extremists? and others not associated with a number of organizations who are being targeted by Paris.

A statement issued by Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) the non-governmental organization said that ?Because of the bombardments and fighting, nobody is moving in the streets of Douentza and patients are not making it through to the hospital. We are worried about the people living close to the combat zones.? (Globe and Mail, January 13)

Islamists Used a Pretext for Invasion

The political crisis in Mali has been developing for over a year when Tuareg separatists sought to create an autonomous enclave in the north of this vast country. The Movement for the National Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) took control of a number of cities early 2012.

Many of these fighters had participated in the resistance to the U.S. and NATO bombing and regime-change efforts in neighboring Libya where the former government was toppled and leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi was brutally assassinated in October of 2011.

Other Islamist groups also entered the contested northern region of the country and began to establish control of key areas around the historic city of Timbuktu and Gao. With the advances of the MNLA in early 2012, tensions mounted within the capital of Bamako in the south.

The Islamist groups which are ostensibly being targeted by France include the Ansar Dine, the Al-Qaeda of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and the Movement for Justice and Unity (MUJWA). AQIM has been active in neighboring Algeria for a number of years which has prompted the U.S. State Department efforts to try to get Algiers to become directly involved in the Malian conflict.

In late March a military coup was carried out by Capt. Amadou Sanogo who was trained in a U.S. military academy. The Pentagon through its U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) had developed close ties with the military in Mali providing training, arms and monetary support.

The overthrow of former President Amadou Toumani Toure was rejected by the regional Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) which withdrew recognition temporarily from the Malian military junta led by Sanogo. Negotiations led by ECOWAS resulted in the formation of an interim government headed by a long time politician Dioncounda Traore who was appointed as president.

Dioncounda later appointed Cheick Modibo Diarra as Prime Minister. Diarra, an astrophysicist who holds a U.S. passport, has served as the representative of Microsoft Corp. in Africa.

Diarra was recently removed from the premiership and replaced by Django Cissoko. Even though the military coup leaders had claimed that their reason for seizing power was to address the apparent failure of the Toure administration in putting down the rebellion in the north, the situation has worsened since the putsch.

The ECOWAS leaders drafted a plan to send 3,300 troops into northern Mali to re-establish the authority of Bamako. A United Nations Security Council resolution was passed in October mandating the mission but no real movement has been made by the regional organization to enter the country.

The Globe and Mail noted that ?The French intervention was so hasty that it did not wait for any clear approval from the UN. The UN Security Council, in a resolution on Dec. 20, said the international military campaign in Mali would need to be ?further refined? and ?confirmed in advance? with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. But there is no evidence that France consulted Mr. Ban before launching its air strikes.? (January 13)

Imperialist Bombings Reflect Failure of U.S. and French Policy in Africa

The French intervention will create an even greater crisis in Mali. The former colony of France has been stifled and weakened by the interference in their internal affairs by both Paris and Washington.

Even the New York Times pointed out that the Pentagon program with the Malian military has been an abysmal failure. A U.S.-trained Capt. Sanogo stages a coup that heightens instability and prompts an imperialist invasion.

The Times stresses that ?as insurgents swept through the desert last year, commanders of this nation?s elite army units, the fruits of years of careful American training, defected when they were needed most?taking troops, guns, trucks and their newfound skills to the enemy in the heat of battle, according to senior Malian military officials.? (NYT, January 13)

This same article continues pointing out that ?Then an American-trained officer overthrew Mali?s elected government, setting the stage for more than half of the country to fall into the hands of Islamic extremists?. Now, in the face of longstanding American warnings that a Western assault on the Islamist stronghold could rally jihadists around the world and prompt terrorist attacks as far away as Europe, the French have entered the war themselves.?

Even though the French claim that the bombing of Mali has halted the advances of the Islamists, reports on January 14 indicate that a counter-offensive has been launched resulting in the widening of the war and the threat of deploying more forces on the ground inside the country. At least 400 additional French troops have been placed in the capital of Bamako.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told French television that ?They (the Islamists) have taken Diabaly?after fierce fighting and resistance from the Malian army.? France, which has withdrawn its forces from Afghanistan, may be facing another long term occupation on the African continent.

In a statement from Oumar Ould Hamaha of MUJWA, the rebel leader told Europe 1 radio that ?They should attack on the ground if they are men. We?ll welcome them with open arms.?

Hamaha went on to say ?France has opened the gates of hell for all the French. She has fallen into a trap which is much more dangerous than Iraq, Afghanistan or Somalia.?

France Suffers Losses in Disastrous Somalia Mission

On the same day that France began bombing Mali, commandos failed in an operation to capture an intelligence officer who has been held by the Al-Shabab organization in southern Somalia for over three years. The raid carried out against Al-Shabab positions in Bulo Marer, was met with fierce resistance resulting in the deaths of an untold number of French Special Forces and the capturing of at least one soldier who later died from his wounds.

The French intelligence officer, Dennis Allex, remained in Al-Shabab custody. The French government said he was killed in the firefight but the Islamic resistance movement indicated that he was still alive and was not at the location which was attacked.

Later the Obama administration admitted that it was involved in the botched operation. The Al-Shabab group has been fighting the U.S.-backed transitional government in Somalia for five years.

U.S. Pentagon and Central Intelligence Agency forces have been training the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) troops composed of military units from several of Washington?s allies in Africa including Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia and Kenya. At present an estimated 17, 500 AMISOM troops are occupying Somalia to prop-up the regime of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In a twitter message from Al-Shabab it emphasized that the soldier captured was the commander of the Special Forces unit. ?The commander was deserted by his comrades after a fierce firefight and subsequently captured by the Mujahideen. ?

The statement went on to report that ?The mujahideen recovered several weapons and the soldier?s gear from the scene of battle and later also managed to retrieve valuable information from the soldier before his death. The body of the soldier is still within the custody of the mujahideen.?

Later a photograph of the dead soldier was published by the press office of Al-Shabab. The statement also said that the organization had ?reached a unanimous verdict on the fate of Dennis Allex after three-and-a-half years in captivity.?

It later added ?The details of that verdict and some background information of the events leading up to the failed rescue operation will be published in the coming hours, God willing.?

FAA grounds Boeing 787s to address battery fires

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal officials say they are temporarily grounding Boeing's 787 Dreamliners until the risk of possible battery fires is addressed.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday it will issue an emergency safety order requiring U.S. airlines to temporarily cease operating the 787, Boeing's newest and most technologically advanced plane.

The agency said it will work with Boeing and U.S. air carriers to develop a plan allowing 787s to "resume operations as quickly and safely as possible." United Airlines is the only U.S. carrier with 787s. It has six.

Only days ago, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood declared the plane safe.

But after an emergency landing in Japan early Wednesday, two Japanese airlines voluntarily grounded their 787s.

The FFA order applies only to U.S. carriers, but aviation authorities in other countries usually follow the lead of the country where the manufacturer is based. Fifty Dreamliners have been delivered in the U.S. and around the world.

Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Samsung Join to Buy Kodak Patents

A dozen or so well-known tech companies together have bought bankrupt Kodak's digital imaging patents for a fire-sale price of $527 million.

Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft and Samsung headline a well-known group of technology companies that have joined together to buy the digital imaging patent assets of the Eastman Kodak, which have been up for sale through bankruptcy proceedings. The sale, for $527 million, was approved Jan. 11 by Judge Allan L. Gropper of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal.? The transaction, which brought in far less money than Kodak expected to receive to repay its debtors, will take about 45 days to close because several international approvals are required, according to the report. Also included in the group buying the patents are Adobe Systems, Research in Motion, HTC, Fujifilm Holdings., Huawei Technologies, Amazon.com and Shutterfly, the paper reported. Prior to the sale, Kodak had been attempting to sell its digital imaging patents for about $2 billion. "A lawyer for Kodak's official committee of unsecured creditors said that while the $527 million price is disappointing, it provides 'much-needed liquidity' to the case," according to the story. The Kodak digital imaging patents involve technologies used in digital cameras, smartphones and tablet computers. Kodak, which filed for bankruptcy in January 2012, has been working to shed unprofitable business units as it streamlines its operations to survive in a market that has drastically changed since it ruled the world of film throughout most of the 20th Century. Kodak has dropped the production of much of its famous film stocks and is still working to find itself again in a market now dominated by digital photography. Reports in December 2012 first alluded to the consortium of tech companies that were looking to join together to buy the Kodak patents for a song. That started when Apple and Google apparently chose to put their intense and often cutthroat rivalry aside to work together with others to go after the Kodak patents. Each had tried separately in the past to obtain the patents from Kodak for less money, but were unsuccessful. That Google and Apple could team up suggests a healing of old wounds, a desire to stay out of court later?should one or the other win the portfolio?or simply the attractiveness of the patents. In 2011, Apple rounded up a posse that collectively outbid Google for 6,000 Nortel Networks patents related to 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE), wireless, networking and social software. Companies are often busy buying patents from others or licensing patents from others to help their own operations. And patent fights have been big news in the technology marketplace for some time, particularly Apple and Samsung which have been fighting big battles over patents in smartphones and tablet computers. Apple won a $1 billion patent infringement ruling from Samsung in a U.S. court in August 2012, which remains the subject of legal proceedings. The Google-Apple rivalry, it's been suggested, was also more intense when the late Steve Jobs was in charge of Apple. While Google CEO Larry Page once suggested that Jobs' ire toward Google was more for show than out of anything heartfelt, Jobs told his biographer, Walter Isaacson, otherwise. "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong," Jobs said, according to Isaacson. "I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product."

London Personal Trainer | Chunky To Hunky Day 13

London Personal Trainer | Chunky To Hunky Day 10

So, here I am at day 13 of my chunky to hunky experiment.

To date I?ve lost 4.5kg (not bad) but haven?t really shifted much weight in nearly 4 day now (only about .5kg), yet the inches are still dropping, my trousers and training shorts are getting loose and my lovehandles while still definitely there, are far, far less than they were just 2 short weeks ago.

All in all I?m pleased, particularly as my weekend was almost wiped out due to a back injury (not a nasty one but still, back was in spasm most of the weekend due to a moment?s lost attention under a heavy squat bar.

The results are definitely happening. At least, I think they are :)

My big targets now are for some of the fat to disperse around my pecs and for my lovehandles to look a lot less obvious from the rear.

It?s never been my belief or my intent that I?d be a summer six-pack model in these 30 days, especially as I?m not committing that much time to this, but I?d like to look in fairly decent shape and, more importantly, FEEL in good shape as a result of my endeavours.

And I?m well on my way already, me thinks :)

What do YOU think?

ITB Business Travel Days point the way to the future

Travel and event managers have to take decisions with the future in mind, which is why they must constantly take their core expertise to new levels and detect changing situations at an early stage.

itb-berlin-verticleVery shortly, they will be gathering again at their established meeting place, at the ITB Business Travel Days in Berlin. From 6 to 8 March 2013 this three-day event features training courses on basic methods, information on strategies and tools in the field of business and travel event management.

Business travellers have to cope with more and more responsibilities. What changes must be made in travel management spheres in order for companies to better meet their corporate social responsibilities (CSR)? At the Business Travel Strategy Day, under the heading of ?Burnout or Balance - CSR and Health on Business Trips?, experts will be providing answers to this question. Other topics include travel managers? needs with regard to airlines, the introduction of a travel management system in the public sector and tips on how companies can stay mobile in the future.

The Business Travel Practical Day features plenary sessions, for example on ?Rental car procurement? and ?The ?art? of being a travel manager?, as well as limited-attendance workshops on ?Travel safety and travel risk management? and ?Fleet management??.

On 6 March, at the ITB MICE DAY, the focus will be on event management topics. Increasingly, the principle underlying events and incentives is ?law and order?. Newcomers and professionals will receive specific advice on their day-to-day work.

The Young Professional Day offers career starters and academically qualified young employees in the global travel industry ideas for shaping their future. Three specialist careers will be discussed.

Speakers and panel guests belonging to well-known trade associations will ensure a high standard of lectures at the event. Among the associations represented are the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE), Bundesverband Fuhrparkmanagement, Bundesverband Materialwirtschaft, Einkauf und Logistik (BME), Verband Deutsches Reisemanagement (VDR) and Vereinigung Deutscher Veranstaltungsorganisatoren.

Two new and exclusive events are devoted to providing decision-makers and senior executives with networking opportunities: the ?Home of Business Travel by ITB & VDR? in Hall 7.1a and the ?ITB Corporate MICE Lounge powered by HSMA? in Hall 8.1.

A trade visitor pass to ITB Berlin costs 48 euros online and grants free admission to all seminars at the ITB Business Travel Days. Travel managers and event planners can also take advantage of a travel special which includes the trip to the show, accommodation arrangements and other extras. Prices start at 188 euros. 6 Essential Questions & Answers About Content Marketing for 2013

Content Marketing 2013For every social media, SEO or content marketing ?expert? there are hundreds, if not thousands of smart business people that do not possess advanced knowledge in those areas. That?s not unreasonable, since running a business involves more than keeping up with the latest internet marketing best practices.

On this blog we often include the basics of search, social and content marketing because that?s where a lot of people need confidence and affirmation that they?re on the right track. ?To support that approach, here are a series of questions my co-worker Miranda Miller shared with me as prep for an online radio show. Hopefully, if you?re responsible for attracting, engaging and converting new business for your company, you will find them useful.

What is content marketing and what is it not?

I?ll start with what Content Marketing is not. It?s not limited to creating compelling media. It?s not simply creating?more content. Content Marketing also is not just a SEO tactic or poorly informed?blogger outreach.

Content marketing is meaningful information designed to be useful for a certain audience with the intention of inspiring an outcome or action. As I mentioned in a recent Forbes article,??The content marketers I know use customer insight, interests, goals and pain points to create editorial plans and that provide utility, not noise. It?s meaningful storytelling, not just mechanical spray and pray.?

The more I interact with corporate marketing and public relations professionals all over the world, the more I am convinced that Optimize does a great job of helping search, social and content marketers integrate and develop a more holistic approach.

How has the importance or value of content changed over the time you?ve been in online marketing?

Since I came into digital marketing through web development and search, that?s the perspective I?ll share. Within the SEO world, marketers would usually work with content that already existed and the task would be to optimize what?s there for better visibility on search engines.

When keyword targets were not represented with content, recommendations would be made to create new content. This is where (in 2007) I started promoting the idea of connecting with frontline staff like customer service and sales teams to log frequently asked questions. Answering those questions in a blog or a FAQ could not only provide new content inventory for optimization, but surface the kind of information that would be most helpful to people. This particular approach of answering customer questions has really taken off in the past year or two.

Efforts would also be undertaken to inventory existing digital assets and content for use online as a SEO asset. The focus for search marketers was very much on keywords and the assumption that companies knew their customers well enough to create the kind of information that could ?sell? to the people being driven to company websites through search.

Content became a commodity in the SEO world through article spinning, scraping, doorway pages, etc because the more content included in search results, the more SERP shelf space you had to attract traffic. That approach extended to different media types once search engines began to include video, blogs, news, images and other digital assets in the search results.

Fast forward to 2012 and 2013 and you see that SEOs have become more creative with content and focused more on content quality.

However, I think there?s still a disconnect in that keywords drive editorial vs. using customer insights to drive topics & editorial which then inspire keyword optimization. In other words, optimizing for customer experience: discovery, consumption and engagement as the priority.

Because of the growing interest and attention with content, the opportunists will exploit the superficial and we?re going to see a lot?more crap content?posing as the good stuff.

For companies that can integrate their efforts at building community and tapping into various data sources from that?community via? social media, web analytics and internet marketing performance, there is a true competitive advantage to stand out amongst the growing volume of ?content marketing? tactics posing as useful information.

What are a few of the industry-specific challenges you see in your company?s content plan, ie.: finance, B2B, publishing and how do you plan for those?

I wrote a post about this recently, ?5 Reasons Why Companies Are Challenged by Content Creation & How to Fix?. Regulated industries must pay attention to a different set of rules than others and there?s definitely a difference between content needs for a long, B2B sales cycle than the kind of content and media that?s useful for impulse consumer products.

How will you and your team prepare to combat the new year slump (as is typical in many industries)?

Our editorial calendar provides for a continuous stream of relevant content that we plan for in advance. I like to keep a queue of articles and posts to draw from so there is no slump of ideas to share, just our individual ability to execute in a timely manner.

Also, a lot of our current marketing is tied to events, so we?re creating content and promotions pre-event, during and afterwards that ensures we?re visible in the industry on a continuous basis.

What sort of ?housekeeping? should marketers be doing with their content collection?

There?s something to be said about outdated content ? whether to sunset it & redirect or to repurpose. Some companies simply delete outdated content to avoid misinforming people with information that?s not up to date or no longer valid. That?s appropriate of course but in the process of determining how to deal with outdated content, some thought should be given to how that content could be repackaged, creatively redirected to fresh information or even repurposed.

There?s no doubt that content should be managed from the perspective of it?s usefulness to the target audience and for advancing business objectives. ?If that same content can continue to serve as an asset for attracting new business through search, social media and the news media, then optimizing the discovery, consumption and?engagement?value of that content is essential.

What do you see on the horizon for content marketing in 2013?

Here are a few future thoughts on Content Marketing, but be sure to watch for an upcoming post that will dig deeper.

  • Smarter efforts towards data informed content planning, promotion and performance optimization
  • Integration of earned, owned and shared media
  • More companies adopting content creation as a core part of their marketing mix
  • Opportunists reverse engineering the success elements of content and exploiting the hell out of them, causing ?content blindness? amongst consumers/buyers
  • Companies that have been spending on social will now be drilling deeper into how to make those investments pay off in customers and revenue
  • Convergence between Public Relations and Marketing with content creation playing a pivotal role
  • More companies focused on UnGoogling their online marketing efforts.

There you have it. A few key questions and answers about content marketing. What are some of your most pressing questions about content marketing?

Morneau headlines Canada?s provisional roster for World Baseball Classic

Former American League MVP Justin Morneau headlines Baseball Canada?s provisional roster submitted on Saturday to the World Baseball Classic?s organizers.

Morneau, from New Westminster, B.C., is one of 12 players included in the list that have played in Major League Baseball.

?I?m pleased to see that our roster consists of many players that have worn the Canadian colours before with our National Teams program,? said Canadian manager Ernie Whitt. ?The familiarity our players have with one another, and the coaching staff, will be beneficial in a short tournament like the World Baseball Classic.?

Morneau, who plays first base for the Minnesota Twins, was joined by catcher Russell Martin of the Pittsburgh Pirates, closer John Axford of the Milwaukee Brewers, reliever Jesse Crain of the Chicago White Sox, outfielder Michael Saunders of the Seattle Mariners and third baseman Brett Lawrie of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Also being named to the roster are some familiar names with the National Team, including Chris Robinson (Dorchester, Ont.), Jimmy Van Ostrand (Richmond, B.C.), Jonathan Malo (Joliette, Que.) and Adam Loewen (Surrey, B.C.).

The official provisional roster will be announced by WBC on January 17th.

The remaining five players elected to fill out the provisional roster will be announced at a later date.

Of the 23 players on the provisional roster, eight were part of the World Baseball Classic in 2009 which includes Phillippe Aumont, Crain, Chris Leroux, Martin, Lawrie, Morneau, Pete Orr and Saunders. Players from the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic roster include

jurywoman oratory: jonfinchy: Blogs Linger ? Rochester Web ...

One of the most popular activities that take place on the internet is the use of email, which 92 percent of online adult users do every day. The Pew Internet and American Life Project came up with this statistic showing email use being second only to search. Therefore, it shouldn?t be a surprise that Rochester web development companies focus on providing email hosting along with other important marketing services used for generating success on the web. Identifying quality email hosting services is achieved by understanding what elements should be involved. For example, quality email hosting should involve the tools needed to filter spam and viruses.

It?s important to find Rochester web design companies that offer solutions to filter spam and viruses from email. This information is obtained by asking questions or researching Rochester web development companies online. Rochester web development companies offering email hosting solutions should also offer plenty of customizable configurations and the ability to handle multiple accounts. Custom domain names are also commonly used, especially by internet marketers and online business owners. Most people don?t realize the first email was sent in 1971 on a system known as ARPANET. ARPANET is considered the forerunner of our modern internet today.

During Bill Clinton?s presidency, Bill Clinton sent two emails. One email was considered a test email while the other email was sent to John Glenn, who was aboard the space shuttle at that time. Today, email is an important element for communications and advertisements. People should do their research on Rochester web development companies because not all of them offer quality email hosting programs. Your particular need for email hosting will dictate what type of plan to choose. Some plans are designed to handle a significant amount of email and accounts, while other plans are used for smaller business owners that need only a bare minimum of services.

Apple's Jan. 23 earnings conference call viewed as most important in 10 years

Ahead of its holiday quarterly earnings report, Apple finds itself in a situation the company hasn't encountered in awhile: investor expectations for the next year are surprisingly low.

With that in mind, Ben A. Reitzes of Barclays Capital believes Apple's earnings conference call on Jan. 23 will be the company's most important in the last decade.

Over the last three months, Apple's stock price has fallen by nearly 17 percent. One of the reasons is believed to be investor concern over Apple's continued growth potential and gross margins heading into calendar 2013.

Barclays has maintained its overweight rating for AAPL stock, as Reitzes believes that Apple faces lower expectations for its fiscal year 2013. He sees new product cycles from the company later this year helping to change investor sentiment.

In particular, Reitzes is a proponent of Apple building a low-end iPhone to address emerging markets like China. Recent reports have claimed that Apple plans to release such a device this year.

While some investors are concerned that a low-cost iPhone would cut into Apple's margins, Reitzes doesn't share that sentiment. He also believes that other investors will change their tune if and when the product is built.

"We believe Apple can sell a phone with a more inexpensive casing for emerging markets and a (bill of materials) below $150, and believe concerns around margin dilution may be overdone, given the pending benefit to revenues," Reitzes wrote in a note to investors on Friday.

He believes that Apple is in a "peer group of U.S. disruptors" that also includes Google, Amazon and Facebook. Reitzes noted that Amazon and Google also saw large sell-offs in 2011, but those are a "distant memory" after both companies rebounded in 2012.

"Momentum can change quickly among the leaders in disruptive mobility ??along with sentiment," he said. "If Apple can prove yet again it is more than a handset company, then we believe shares can recover."

The way we play video games is forever evolving. Nintendo brought motion control to the masses with the Wii, while the rise of smartphones and tablets has meant the number of casual games (and casual gamers) has grown exponentially over the past few years. What is next on the agenda? The signs all point towards a more immersive experience being the main aim and Microsoft Research is keen to lead the way with IllumiRoom.

IllumiRoom brings the visuals of video games out beyond the boundaries of the television. Using a Kinect for Windows camera and a projector, IllumiRoom is able to bring certain elements of individual games into your living room. The camera scans your personal space to capture the dimensions and geometry involved, which the projector then utilizes for displaying images. These range from a direct extension of the playing area, to the appearance of particular effects such as snowflakes or sparks.

IllumiRoom isn't yet an actual product, but as a proof-of-concept it's clearly related to the "immersive display experience" patent Microsoft applied for in 2011. The patent describes a system which brings a "peripheral image" from the television screen into the room occupied by the gamer. This system looks to be competing with the new breed of virtual reality systems such as the Oculus Rift and Sensics SmartGoggles gaming headsets.

Sony showed off a similar application in 2011 which utilized the PlayStation Move. With both companies expected to unveil their next-generation consoles before the end of this year it's entirely feasible that this kind of "Holodeck" experience will be available to gamers sooner rather than later.

Microsoft showed IllumiRoom off during the Samsung keynote at CES 2013, and further details on the future product are promised at CHI 2013 in Paris at the end of April. In the meantime we'll have to make do with the video embedded below, which shows IllumiRoom working in real-time with images being captured and rendered live.
