Financial Aid Night planned for high school seniors and their parents

The FAFSA deadline is approaching for many college-bound high school seniors.

To help students and parents understand this financial aid step, Bridges to College and Edison Community College are offering a College Financial Aid Night at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Edison Community College in Greenville.

?To be eligible for federal grants, loans and work-study programs, students must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA),? said Beth Sears, Bridges to College executive director. ?Some colleges also require that students complete the FAFSA in order to receive institutional financial aid.?

While the College Financial Aid Night is being offered at Edison Community College, it is designed for students attending any two-year or four-year post-secondary institution.

During the College Financial Aid Night, a representative from Edison Community College will give an overview of the financial aid process including filling out the FAFSA.

The deadline for completing the FAFSA varies per college, but most deadlines are in late winter or early spring. Students should check with their college to find out what the college?s deadline is.

?Students miss out on financial aid opportunities because they miss these important deadlines,? Sears said.

?We are working with Edison to offer this program because, in the past, many parents have asked for more information about the financial aid component,? Sears said.

Bridges to College is a non-profit organization that helps more students go to college through mentoring, educational programming and scholarships. While it serves students in the Greenville and Ansonia school districts, it is offering this program to all Darke County high school seniors and their parents.
