"And Then the Sun Came Out"

The skies over Thanksgiving in Michigan were overcast and gray, but I didn't care. At least I was home. My first time since moving back out to Chicago.

Most of my extended family was off doing other things, so it was just me, my parents, my grandparents and my aunt eating a 9-pound bird. We met at the retirement community my grandparents live at.

It's a new building (2009) on a manmade lake, with a nice view of the forest. After dinner, I headed back downstairs and sat in the main atrium where the piano is, sort of closed my eyes, and this song came out of the end of my fingertips.

I'm in my second year of college, and I can feel myself starting to pull away from the things I thought I believed in when I graduated high school. I feel alive, but I feel far from God. That sort of emptiness is where this song came from.

Once I finished playing, I opened my eyes, and the entire atrium was bathed in sunlight. Light was streaming in through these huge plate-glass windows right behind me and the piano, and for the first time in a long time, I felt warm.

I uploaded the song to my laptop, but didn't think to share it with anyone else until now.

You may have to turn your volume up a bit, but hopefully hearing this little tune will warm you up, as well.

Because the winter is only going to get colder.
