What happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas?this much, we now know. And while there are those who are outraged that someone would violate Prince Harry?s privacy to shoot him naked (in the billiards room, with Miss Scarlett), it?s a fair point that the third in line to the throne?who turns 28 next month?should have better sense than to strip down with a group of girls he met that evening at a Las Vegas bachelorette party.?(In one of our favorite new details, he even appears to have expropriated a ?Lauren?s Bachelorette? tank top from one of the revelers.)
?Obviously it?s embarrassing, but he?s probably doing something that most men in this country have done,? London-based royal historian Hugo Vickers told VF Daily. ?I don?t think it will make any difference at all. People will forget. We probably won?t see him for a while, but that?s because he?s returning to his military duties. The royal family have a good sense of fun and humor?I don?t think he will be ?grounded? for this. I think it will go away very quickly.?
And birth order could have something to do with Harry?s seeming uncertainty as to what is and isn?t appropriate for someone in his position. The younger prince ?pulled a short straw by being the second son,? says Vickers. ?It?s a very strange position to be in, to never know where he stands.? During the Games, Harry held an official role as an Olympic ambassador?a gig he assumed just after spending the spring touring for the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee?but as of August 12, his obligations were done. To blow off steam, the prince opted for some Vegas R&R (or should that be B&B?booze and billiards?) with pals Tom ?Skippy? Inskip and Arthur Landon before he returns to his military duties as a pilot this fall. ?It?s always bad timing, but he wasn?t doing it in the middle of the Olympics. Twenty years ago he could have gone to Las Vegas and no one would have known, but that?s just not the case anymore. Modern communication is such that you cannot do a thing. I?m sure we could all think of a situation where if someone had a camera and took a photo we would not come out in the best light,? continues Vickers. ?I have rather a lot of sympathy for him. He?s a very good chap. If you fell into a lake, he?d be the first person to dive in and pull you out.?
This is not, naturally, the first time Harry has found himself in a compromising situation, most notably being the 2005 party where he donned an SS costume, resulting in the Sun headline ?Harry the Nazi.? That unfortunate incident was followed by the 2006 video (not leaked until 2009) showing the prince at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he refers to an officer from the Pakistani army as ?our little Paki friend? and described a fellow officer cadet in a camouflage veil with the proclamation, ?Fuck me, you look like a raghead.?
But do naked photographs of a member of the House of Windsor take royal scandal to a whole new level? Fergie, the Duchess of York?although not royal by blood?has always worked hard to keep up with Harry on the scandal front, and had her own nude-photo scandal. In 1992, images of her sunbathing topless emerged, with her toes deep in the cavernous mouth of American financial manager John Bryan. The photos have since been joined on Fergie?s scandal time line by her 2010 fall from grace after attempting to sell access to her husband to an undercover reporter.
But because we so doubt that Fergie will be pulling Harry aside to offer counsel, we look to the Middletons to perhaps proffer a word or two of advice. After last April?s royal wedding, photographs of James semi-nude similarly cupping his manhood surfaced, as did images of him sporting a rather fetching French maid?s outfit and one simulating sex with a friend.
And photos were published of Pippa wearing a toilet-paper mini-dress as well as dancing in her bra out of doors around the same time. James, Pippa, and Harry are all under 30?showing this is the way of the world for a younger generation.
Not everyone will be forgiving. The former press secretary to Queen Elizabeth II, ?Dickie Arbiter, told The?Evening Standard last night that Harry was a ?loose cannon and shouldn?t be left alone.? The Palace has yet to comment as to whether or not he will be reprimanded.
