Just wondering. I?m going to be a Freshmen next year. We take english, science, history, and math for 4 years, but we also take classes like dance, theatre, music theory (I?m planning on AP music theory since they have it), etc. Would this effect my chances of going to yale when I apply? @ How: Will do. There?s more AP classes than just for music theory. Like for science and math and things. Just that that?s an option. Well, I have your answer right here. It depends. If it?s like the well known performing arts school in my city, than it may be an issue, depending on how you play it. Academics are a second thought, and while the school has high standardized tests for a public school, it?s because there are a group of kids who attend major tutoring (2+ hours a day and all day Saturday) to bring their level of learning close to a top public, or good private school. Several of my son?s friends transferred to private schools (and admissions to our arts school is extremely competitive) because the academics weren?t up to par. So it really depends on your school and what you do to make sure you?re getting everything you need. If your other option is a regular public school, it probably doesn?t make much difference. If you are required to have extra hours of schooling due to your art (like at the school in my area) than that may be an impediment to your resume. While the Ivies want your extracurriculars to center around your Passion and have Depth and Focus, you might be a little too focused if you don?t have activities outside of school. You need to stand out, and your first line of competition is your classmates. If you can stand out next to them, than you stand a chance. 85% of Ivy applicants are qualified to attend, but only 7% ? 10% are admitted. So no one has a great chance of being admitted to the Ivies, in reality. Even very highly qualified legacies who attend extremely rigorous private high schools only have about a 30% chance. You?ll want to have about 4. 0 gpa and a 2100+ SAT score to be competitive. Do what you can to stand out. What type of interesting extracurriculars and community service, based on your Passion, can you do? Also, compete, and hopefully win state and national level contests. You need to get 5s (*maybe* 4s) on your AP tests, especially if you get As. It brings into question your schools grading and curriculum if kids get As in AP classes but 1s and 2s on their AP tests. My dh participates in the admissions process for his Ivy alma mater, so I?m aware of how it works. @ How actually has a good point. The top colleges and Ivies reach out to diversify their campuses, as they should.
