Stay patient with Dhoni, urges Sunil Gavaskar ? Cricket News Update

India?s former Test skipper, Sunil Gavaskar, has come out in support of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been under immense criticism since India?s ouster from the on-going ICC World T20 2012.

The Men in Blue had to beat South Africa by a minimum of 31 runs in their last Super 8 encounter at Colombo in order to qualify for the tournament?s semi-finals; however, they could just manage a 1 runs victory. Some of Dhoni?s moves in the match were bamboozling for the cricket experts, who believe that poor captaincy cost India the mega event.

Some of the former cricketers are of the view that a wicket-taking bowler like Harbhajan Singh should have been played in the fixture and others believe that the skipper should have bowled Ravichanrdran Ashwin, his premier spinner, much earlier.

Gavaskar, who was a prolific opening batsman in his playing days, feels that putting all the blame on the captain is not justified as cricket is a team game and all the players should be held accountable.

The former captain maintains that India must persist with Dhoni, who has led the Men in Blue to title triumphs in the ICC World T20 2007 in South Africa as well as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 at home.

Gavaskar wants the fans to be patient with the wicketkeeper/batsman and thinks that most of the successful teams do not tinker with captaincy every other day.

"Not necessarily. I don't think so. There were several instances of captains playing on. Mahela Jayawardene continued after Sri Lanka's defeat in the 2007 World Cup (final),? said the former cricketer. ?I think the only country that talks about captain is India. India somehow is so impatient with skippers.?

He further added that there are many other problems attached with the Indian team than just defensive leadership and thinks that the players must enhance their fielding, if the country is to be more competitive in international cricket.

"At times you tend to think of why bother being the captain at all, it's better off just being a player. It's a little bit harsh. We haven't done well but we can't blame the captain only. There are several aspects - I talked about athleticism aspect, fielding aspect,? he mentioned.
